Racing or driving shoes?

There was a recent post of an accident caused by the floor matt getting caught in the accelerator pedal. People mentioned hairy incidents driving with flip flops or shoe laces getting tangled in the pedals.

Since the foot boxes are cramped, anyone have any recomendations on driving shoes or racing shoes?

I have Sparco shoes. Great for driving but you wouldn't want to do much else in them.

I have wide feet, and if I wear regular sport shoes, I will sometimes hit both the brake and clutch at the same time.

I now have Piloti's and never have any problems.

Puma have a great range of motorsport shoes. I've got a couple of pairs of their shoes and a couple of pairs of booties. They are comfortable and I wear them just casual too. They have a heap of different styles to chose from too.

They make a bunch of shoes for Ferrari. I've got a pair of these and they are super comfortable and fit my wide neanderthal feet.

Puma Speed Cat if you can get them down under. Very comfortable and only cost about $25 U.S. Have the wrap around heel and are narrow but not excessively so.

I have some Puma's that are close to Ausie Mike's (white stripe on mine). Super comfortable. Bought them on-line through Nordstrom. Just put some black tape over the Ferrari emblem.

They have a few other F1 team shoes. A friend of mine has the BMW Sauber version. I wanted black and Ferrari was the only one they had at my local store.

They need to bring out a Cobra version. I'm sure there would be plenty of takers on here

Simpsons for long drives/track work...with size 13EEs, I need all the room I can get.

Also have some old traditional-style Puma mesh shoes...very flexible.

...and four pairs of Pilotis. From mesh-style all-round type to nomex black leather high top. Great for driving and walking.

Hard to beat some good ol stinky boat shoes though.

Kirkhams used a button in floor piece on my car which I had a rubber foot pad sewn into. No need for floor mats. Learned the lessen of unsecured floor mats a long time ago when I had some coco mats in my BRE 510. Only used them once on the Ortega Highway. Threw them out of the car dropping down into Elsinor after they got in the way a few times.

This is a great thread. These cars are so fast that it is important to be mindful of details like floormats, shoes ..etc... I have the Simpsons, but what I really like best is my well broken in Aldan natural brown loafers with smooth vibram soles. These shoes are perfect for heal toe and a stiff clutch pedal. I like the feel of these shoes so much for driving the Cobra that they are the only shoes I wear in that car. Maybe it is because the feel of the shoes is so predictable to the feel of the pedals...... that it just feels totally familiar.

Simpson's...can wear them all day (as long as you don't have any support issues with yer feet).

I wear deck shoes, you know the brown ones with the white soles. Find they work best for me because they are narrow and don't slip off the pedals.

I used to have a pair of Pilotis and one of Pumas. Very comfortable and what I really liked was I could get out and walk around with them and not have to change shoes.
I now use a pair of cheap slip on shoes with a rubberized sole and canvass top which works great for driving and I can walk all day in them. But they are not legal for track use as they aren't fire retardant.

Where I'm driving sets my choice -

Track events, I choose to wear racing shoes - mine are Spimpson, I have both the hightop and lowtop versions. Only problem I have found is that the fabric portion of the shoe doesn't like water or damp grass, and over time will seperate from the sole. (Makes a nice air gap )

If I'm just out for a short ride, then I slip into a pair of "slip-on" driving loafers; the kind that has the little rubber nubs on the bottom. They also don't like water as the whole shoe is more like a bedroom slipper (all leather).

Try to avoid shoes where the sole extends beyond the sides of the shoe, as this will surely catch on your other foot when using the pedals in such a small space (been there and done that)
I do the "deck shoe" thing every once in awhile (when just moving the car around or washing it). The grip is good, but the soles will catch sometimes.

Driving with flip flops anywhere in these cars in "Just Plain Crazy" in my opinion.

AND, NO Floor Mats on the Track!!!

It may take trial and error to find out what works for you. I tried the Piloti's and didn't care for them. The rubber on the sole seemed too thick and I felt like I had no feel for the pedals. The Pumas are virtually flat, which work well for me.

I too sport the Puma brand on my feet. Before getting the shoes I would constantly depress two pedals at a time, now it never occurs.
