Identifying pre 1966 SB & BB Engine Blocks ?
Is there a published source for identifying all models, CI etc of pre 1966 SB & BB Ford engines after the engine has been removed from the vehicle and there is no way to trace the original VIN and Title ?
The CT DMV/Emissions has published the following summary of emissions systems by year.
Year of Engine Emissions Controls Required of All Vehicles That Year
Pre - 1966 None
1966 - 1970 PCV, Variable Advance Distributor
1971 – 1978 PCV, Variable Advance Distributor, Evap. Canister, and Thermostatic Air Cleaner or Air Injection System
1979 – 1988 PCV, Variable Advance Distributor, Evap. Canister, Thermostatic Air Cleaner or Air Injection System, and CAT
1989 – 1995 PCV, Variable Advance Distributor, Evap. Canister, CAT, Computerized Engine Management, O2 sensor
1996 – current PCV, Electronic Spark Control, Evap. Canister, CAT, Closed Loop Computerized Engine Management, O2 sensors, Fuel Injection
All Medium Duty Vehicles (under 10,001 lbs GVWR but greater than Lt. Duty till 2004 then under 14,001 but greater than Lt. Duty) with Gasoline Engine were equipped with the controls indicated below:
Pre - 1966 None
1966 – 1979 PCV, Variable Advance Distributor
1980 – 1984 PCV, Variable Advance Distributor, and Thermostatic Air Cleaner or Air Injection System
1985 – 1992 PCV, Variable Advance Distributor, Evap. Canister, Thermostatic Air Cleaner or Air Injection System
1993 – 2004 PCV, Variable Advance Distributor, Evap. Canister, CAT, Computerized Engine Management, O2 sensor
2005 – current PCV, Electronic Spark Control, Evap. Canister, CAT, Closed Loop Computerized Engine Management, O2 sensors, Fuel Injection

With the cast number and bore & stroke, you can pretty much identify anything.
Do you have something in particular that needs to be identified?

The book "Ford Performance" by Pat Ganahl lists different part number for each different ford motor from 260 small block forward. It's an excellent reference.

Per 1965 small block fords I think had 5 bolt bell housings. Ford used an alpha numeric coding to identify their engines and parts. Can be obtained from INTERNET.

CT DMV, CT Emissions, and CT EPA have revised the emissions exemption for kit/replica cars as of August 1st indicating the emission systems/hardware must still be installed even though the actual emission testing will still be exempted. This requirement has been verified.
In 2007 the CT General Assembly passed a bill exempting all Composites, CT designation for replicas and kit cars, from the emission testing phase. At the time there was not any reference to the emission systems/hardware, just exempting the testing.....a classic Catch 22 situation
For new registrations & inspections after August 1, the owner needs to show to the inspector documented ( not defined ) proof on the engine block year. From 1966 and later the inspector will verify the emissions hardware is installed.
While I am OK, there are others that are progressing with their builds or have contracted for a turn key supplier and the vehicle is not yet registered, no grandfather clauses or interim grace period
Challenge will be to identify a " documented proof " source which can be shown to the inspector and accepted.

Couldn't someone just take a picture of the cast number on the block and verify the date?

I think that should take care of it. On the FE's they can be hard to read and upside down when in the car. Date code tells the exact year/month/day of the casting. Casting number itself decade and year. There are some quirks to reading date codes which can be confusing. FWIW both the Genesis and Pond FE blocks are cast with a 65 date code and casting number.
Don I'm down in Fairfield. If you guys need any help shoot me a pm. I'd be glad to help out.
