Default Ma emissions laws

Anyone know how they pertain to a Cobra. I heard there may be some changes. Does this affect us?

My Cobra is titled in MA as a 2006 Replica Roadster. I've passed inspection 3 times so far. The first time was easy because the vehicle was new. The 2nd and 3rd time the inspection computer came back emission exempt - I believe that the mechanic was able to enter 1966 as the year of the vehicle because of the short assigned vehicle identification number. I heard that emissions inspections may be a thing of the past in MA (maybe just a good dream). My recommendation is to make sure that you go to a hot rod friendly inspection station and ask a bunch of questions before they start typing your information into the computer.

I think with the kirkham I get something other than a title. Has anyone titled there car as a 65? Or is it titled as a 08 replicar?

I bought SPF used and it had originally been titled in MA as a 65 Ford Cobra. No emission testing needed.

Most of the MA people I have talked with said it cannot be registered as a 60's vehicle in MA.

And the excise tax this year was $7.50. Horrors!

Kirkham will send you a MCO (mfg certificate of origin). You use this to obtain your title. Or use receipts to title as a kit car.

Well if I use receipts won't I be paying a huge excise tax? Warren how is your excise tax so low when the car is worth tens of thousands? I want to make sure I go about this the right way
thanks
chris

Because MA gov't is DUMB and lazy (city and state). They have no idea how much an exotic car costs. Many people that own Ferrari's and Lamborghini's pay very little excise tax. They just had a big article on that in the Herald a couple of months ago.

My Cobra was already registered as a 65 Ford Cobra in MA when I bought it. The value was not in the RMV handbook when I registered it, so they called Boston ... and the "experts" did not have a clue either. So they used my Bill of Sale price for my sales tax. But the value of a 65 Ford is somewhere in the vicinity of $500 in the state "car value book" which the town uses for calculating the excise tax. Same thing for my 70 Olds 442.

And we wonder why our taxes are so high?

Here in ct the assesor has a book with pictures of variousCobra's as well as ebay prices so you end up paying about what you paid for it.
