Default Tremec 500 Gearbox oil

I have just fitted my first Tremec and the instructions call for Dexron 3 / Mercon spec ATF fluid. I was just wondering why they specify automatic trans fluid in a manual box?

I thought the tremec called for the GM syncromesh fluid. The TKO600 does.

I have the Tremec 3550 5 speed and it called for GM syncromesh. I have seen gear boxes that take ATF like transfer case's on some 4x4.

JimiG at Standard Transmission sold me my TKO600, recommended and shipped with it "Amsoil Synthetic Manual Syncromesh Transmission Fluid SAE 5W-30" and he said that is what they advise for all the TKO units

Default BG Synchroshift II

In my Tremec 3550 and then my close ratio 600 box in my SPF, i have used the recommended ATF, in Redline, D4ATF. It worked well. But i wanted to try just something different, and have used Redline MTL and MTL 90 in other cars, with improved synchromesh shifting, but have found that the best of them all was a BG products fluid, a synthetic called Synchorshift II, not cheap when i have my local repair shoop, who used other BG products in his work, to order it for me. I think it is about 20 bucks a quart, and takes just under three quarts. I drain my transmission from below, then put the drain plug back in, then run a plastic hose, the kind you can get at any home depot type store, i think a half inch, and stuff one end into the fill hole, and run the end up along side the passenger side of the motor, tie it up, and stick a funnel in it, and drizzle the gearbox oil in until it runs out the fill hole. The warmer the oil lthe better it flows in.

The D4ATF was really good, the BG just a tad bit better in shifting. These are still manly gearboxes, and take a hefty shove to shift.

I found on a hot race track that at the end of a long track session, my gearbox could be beat on 2-3 upshifts, but it worked fine when it cooled down, so i granny shift when it gets like that. Dennis Olthoff told me the Tremec isn't really a racing transmission, and with out a cooler, it just does that when hot.

so, i suggest either D4ATF or the Synchroshift. I have about 130+ thousand miles on my two Tremec boxes with these, and no problems.

The story I got from our Tremec supplier was that some syncro parts are carbon fiber, and "glued" in place, and anything other than dextron III wil disolve the glue.
No, I didn't check this on snopes!!

I have always run 40w synth. oil in my Tremec. Just happened to have changed it this morning, figured it should get replaced after 5 years whether it needed it or not. Used Royal Purple.

Because the "old" trans. oil like you would use in a toploader is toooo thick and the trans will not even shift with it in it.....

All the "new" 5 and 6 speed trans. come with auto trans fluid..

My Tremec bought in the mid 90's called for the same stuff as yours.... I've run Redline MTL with good results and the GM synchromese stuff also and really can't tell the difference........

Put what it calls for and you'll be alright............

I have a T56 manual gearbox, and they said to put automatic fluid in that as well. Touch wood, everything's been fine for the last year!

my TKO always shifted hard. changed out the original syncromesh fluid to Amsoil synth. took about 500 miles and shifts smoother than ever now. I recommend this upgrade.

Thanks for all the replies. That's put my mind at rest using ATF fluid. I'll see what choice of oils I can find in Dubai.

You may also want to check out Ultra Shift from Cobra Valley. Made a difference in my TKO after about 400-500 miles. Good stuff, but not cheap.
-But what IS cheap on these cars?
