CA Registration

New member here, been lurking for a while.
I've got the Cobra bug bad and been doing quite alot of research, most of which here.
I'm a bit wary of the California registration process. I've read many, many pages of posts but I have a few questions left unanswered:
1) Will a new SB Roush (327or 408) pass CA emissions or not? Does FI make a difference?
2) What if I buy a Cobra now and want to wait for an SB-100? Do I get a temporary registration?
3) WHAT IF I DON'T GET ONE OF THE 500?!
There's always a low mileage beauty with SB-100 for sale in CA, so maybe that's my best bet.
4) Does the SB-100 stay for the life of the car? Does change of ownership affect SB-100?
These answers would be greatly appreciated.

To answer some of your questions.

1. If you built a car this year it would have to meet this years emission standards regardless of what engine you use, unless you get a SB-100 number.

2. You can buy one now and depending on the DMV you go to, they will normally issue a temp permit or maybe more than one if it takes you that long until the next round of SB-100 numbers become available.

3. The SB-100 goes with the car. When I bought my Coupe that was what I waited as I didn't want to go through the mess of trying to get one of the few numbers available. And if you sell the car later the SB-100 number goes with it to the new owner.

Failure is not an option!

if you have all of your ducks in a row, the odds are that you'll get an SB100 cert.

If you can find a car at the right price that you like and already has SB100, then go for it and save yourself some sleepless nights at the end of December.

1. No, because it must pass 2008 emissions without the SB100.
2. You can wait for your SB100, but you must start the paperwork process with the various forms from the DMV and pay your fees and taxes.
3. You're out of luck until next year, but if you arrive very early in the morning at an "experienced" DMV, you should get one.
4. Yes, it stays with the car for life, as long as the car stays in CA and doesn't leave the State an get registered in another state.

Buying an existing SB100 car is a great way to go, but you don't always get what you want. If you can get want you want and it has the Sb100 exemption, then buy it.

Thanks for the answers. Good and bad news I suppose.
But does anybody know if a new Roush has a snowball's chance in hell of passing CA emissions?

I should clarify. You must arrive early in the morning on the first DMV business day of the New Year.

Also, FI may help with the emissions, but it still will not pass 2008 emissions.

The Roush will NOT pass..................

Buy a cobra with existing SB100 and change it to what you want.

A sewing machine won't pass 2008 CA emissions, let alone any 302, 351 or FE engine.

when i did mine (2006) they let you test based on year of block. the ref gave me the best odds and called it a '69 351w block (roush 427r w/ new dart block)

anyway I was double the allowable emissions, plus carb wasnt green dot and no heat riser. just too much cam.
