Default Spark Plug Cleaning

I'm playing around with my jetting and reading my spark plugs as a guide as to how rich or lean I am running. My first read of the plugs was that I was running very rich (entire plug was black). I made some jetting adjustments and went to read the plug again and got the same result.

My question is this...If a plug shows a rich condition (all black) and I lean it out will the plug turn back to a normal color or once it is black it never goes back (please, no pun intended here).

It would take a long long long time (no pun here). Plugs are cheap, install a new set.

Of course, a wide band monitor would allow you to read the A/F ratio a lot easier and quicker than reading spark plugs. Just a lot more expensive

Edit - do not try to mechanically clean the plugs. Like I said - install new ones.

No,
If you did not clean the plug and just put it back in black
(no reference to AC DCs "back in black") it will not turn back to normal for quite awhile.
You are going to have to clean the porcelain to get a correct reading.
Depending on how black the plugs are (wet black or dry black) B12 might clean them or buy new ones.

Default Cleaning plugs

A glass bead blaster works a treat for me. Just tape over the outer insulator so it doesn't get blasted or damaged.
cheers,
Bryan

In this article, Henry Olsen states:

Race gas and the leaded gasoline that was sold at your corner gas station until the mid 1970’s was easier to tune for because a tuner could “read” the spark plugs and look at the tailpipe “color” to determine the air/fuel mixture. Today’s reformulated gasoline does not leave any “color” on the spark plug unless the air/mixture is very rich and the tail pipe color is almost meaningless.

Good luck,
Randy...

Years ago I glass bead cleaned some spark plugs and then blew them out with compressed air. I thought I was good to go. A mechanic picked up one of my plugs, and using a metal push pin, swirled it around up inside the body of the plug and the ceramic. A small amount of glass bead media fell out onto the table. That's the last time I considered using a media-blasted spark plug in a car engine.

Spark plugs are cheap.
