Old Classified Ads - Original 427 S/C for $10k

I'm sure this is familiar to folks that have a collection of old car magazines. It frustrates me every time I look at mine.

Sports Car Digest has an interesting story about "Classified Ads from the Past," in particular they profile a 1974 Road & Track ad for a 427 S/C that is selling for $10,000. Those were the days...

FWIW This is CSX3132, not exactly an SC. But $10,000 in 1973 wasn't bad.

So I shouldn't have turned down CSX3327 for $6,800 in late 1973? I had some of the money but the rest was from the bank and I would have had to pay them almost $50.00 per month for THREE YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The $3200 difference was most likely due to round tail lights and the lack of an oil cooler scoop.

Don't know the CSX #, but there was a big block 3000 series street car here for sale, I think it was in 1971 or 72....Red, no side pipes,no roll bar, rode hard and put up wet.... Owner bought it used in 1969, after a year or two, he decided it was not a good daily driver as it was his only mode of transportation...

I remember it well as I rode by it weekly on my bicycle, for sale sign on the windshield said $3,400.00 and it sat under a huge pecan tree in the guy's front yard for 13 months before it sold, it had a nice green tint on the red paint from the tree and full of leaves, small sticks and pecans..........

I was a 16 year old kid with only an old beat up bicycle then, probably didn't have 15 cents in my pocket at the time.........

Not a kid of the 60s but I grew up in Nebraska where the car culture was about a decade or so behind everyone else. When I first left in 91, I could not believe how much more cars cost outside of the state. I walked away from a 68 GTO with a 454 for $1800 because the dealer was a dick, would not let me test drive it, and for the price I could find one that did not need the seat redone. The one I regret was a 68 Camaro RS/SS for $200. Motor threw a rod, but the body was perfect. I decided I needed a car that ran now. Didn't know what it was when I said no.

The one I regret the most was my first love in/of sports cars, The Jag XKE..... In 1979, I was freshly married with a car note and house note and both my wife and I working, me, 2 jobs......Along comes an add in the paper for a 1974 Jag XKE, V-12, silver in color,loaded with every avalaible option on that model, bleonged to a doctor, had 30 something thousand pampered miles on it for $7,800.00.................

begged,argued with the wifey for it, we really couldn't afford it, but I told her they quit the production in 1974 and the value would only go up, she refused to let me buy it.... my plan was to make it a "show car" and not drive it, just show it and keep it till it went up in value, told her in 10 years or less it would be worth at least three time that and then I sell it and use the money for a down payment on a nice house, she still refused....

Add stayed in the paper and after abut three months, I finally wore her down and she let me call the doctor, he had finally sold it two weeks before...

Fast forward 2 years now, we're at the local Father's Day car show and there sits the silver Jag, I asked the owner if he had bought it from a doctor a few years before and he had, it was the very same car, first thing my wife says is;"damn, that's one UGLY car"..

The new owner did exactly what I planned to do and as far as I know still has the car............

Some years later I showed her adds in Hemmings and a few other places, stating that car would be worth about 50 grand at that time.... still didn't bother her..........

I've since bought 6 Mustangs over the years and she found about them when I trailered them home........only way to do it, easier to beg for forgivness, than ask for permission!!!!!!!!!!

The first 2 Mustangs she knew about ahead of time, on # 3 (67 fastback project car), she found out when she saw me hauling down the driveway, she wasn't too happy, then, a month or two later when it went on evil bay and I almost tripled my money, she was realllllllll happy.... now, she trusts my judgement, only problem is I haven't run into any deals in the last couple of years..................

I know this is an old post but I just had to add a little more.

I live in Beaver County, PA and there is a fellow here that runs a business repairing predominately British Cars. His name is Jim Boffo and has run this business for many years.

I remember vividly in the early 1970s one of these cars sitting in his lot and the price tag was a mere 10K! I had a job in a steel mill making $5 and hour and that was good money back then. I didn't bite, duh.

I spoke with him 3 or 4 years ago and he told me the car is now in a museum.

He was and still is a nice guy.

I bought my 71 Steel Cities Gray Corvette that was 6 months old for $3800, with a payment book of $97.08 /month for three years. I just couldn't swing the payments on the black cobra at Sportscar Showcase in Auburn,Ma. They wanted $5,500.

Oh the memories back when the 427 Cobra first appeared I seem to always remember them at in the $7k range and my less than $3.00 an hour salary with a budding family sure put me out of the running. My first real muscle car was a mint 66 SS Chevelle paid $600.00. Also back then when first starting out bought several cars out of junk yards for $50.00 drove them for a few years then sell them for amazing profits. Oh how I miss those days.

Opportunities missed!!! In 1968 I bought a brand new Corvette, some of my buddies told me I could buy a leftover 67 Shelby Cobra for the same money. Being a college kid and needed the car as a daily driver (in the NorthEast) I passed on it. Fastforward to 1977. I called on a local Ad for a 1963, 289 Shelby. The car needed a freshening up, asking price was $20K. So, new in business, newly married and new house, again, I passed on it. Always wondered What If?
