Check the threads that Dep. Attorney General Robert Morgester has graciously shared with us about the previously registered "1965 or 1966" vehicles, that weren't really made in those years and what the State is intending to do about them.

Your best bet is to comply with California's laws and do what the DMV wants you to do. You may slip by with a previously titled 1965 or 66 registration and may escape further scrutiny while the State's A.G. looks into those years of vehicles that were recently registered to new owners for potential "rule skirting".

At the end of the day, the rules are out there to review, albeit they're interpreted differently from one DMV to the next, and you need to make your decision on how long you want to look over your shoulder at who may be wanting to talk to you. I waited in line on Jan 2 and am now done. And fully legal.

No, first owner may have fraudulently/mistakenly registered it as a 1965 and DMV hasn't caught it yet.

They are looking hard at these and will catch them. Best thing to do is take all registration p/w directly to the DMV and tell them the whole truth. Let them decide if it is legally a 1965 registration. If they screw up, it won't come down so hard on you if they are wrong.

I'm not an expert, but I believe the post made jhv48 is incorrect. If you want to drive the car on the public roads of CA AND you want the to be exempt from smog requirements, you must get one of the 500 "SB100" exemptions. It's not that hard to do. Just takes some time and a little aggravation.
The post IS CORRECT. Notice I say if the car was LEGALLY registered as a 1965 Cobra.

If fraud or misrepresentation was involved in the original registration, then it was not LEGAL and as such, if caught, you will be prosecuted and the vehicle will lose its registration.

Not worth it in my opinion. Take the p/w to DMV and let them decide for you. Then pay lots of money and rest easier.
