Default Advice/recomendations--WTB Hi-Per Cobra

Hi All,

New to the Forum.

Looking for a "super" performance Cobra replica (fiberglass body---would rather have the $'s in performance than the aluminum body).

Need a turn key, ready to go, reliable (warrenty if possible), beautiful example.

The more HP the better, but the chassis/brakes/handling must support the HP.

What'ca got, where do I look, who/what do I avoid?

$40K to $70K budget.

Thanks,
George

Start here:

http://www.cobracountry.com/

Drive as many as you can...each "brand" is slightly different in their own ways. Given your budget you can certainly buy a nice Superformance or Backdraft without any problems. Also a used ERA would be a good choice. Doubt you'll get a Kirkham in that range, but occasionally a screaming deal can be found (especially during these rough times).

Good luck,

-Dean

Agree with Dean. Look at and drive as many cars as possible. Depending on where you live, try to link up with one of the regional Cobra Groups to learn about the different makes.

When you find a car that you might want to buy, post in the regional club forum where the car is located. If you're lucky, someone on Club Cobra will know the car and can vouch for it.

You can't miss with a Superformance.

There are a lot of great cars and deals out there. Good luck in your search!

Dean,

Third one down on the Cobracountry site, Loanstar LS427, in Utah looks like the ticket.
Your thoughts?
Thanks,
george

A little farther down is an ERA. More money but a better car IMO.

George, I know little about the Loanstar product because it wasn't on my radar when I was shopping some 5+ years ago for my SPF.

The BIGGEST mistake many make when buying a Cobra is that they have the money ready to deploy and the deals are looking really good, and then they buy something that (a) either doesn't fit their frame well or (b) it wasn't what they thought it would be. Owning a Cobra is a relationship...it's simply a very raw ride (think Harley-Davidson with four tires) and a very visceral experience. If you don't care about noise, cold wind in your hair, getting caught in the rain, gas fumes, scaring the bajeebies out of small children, setting off car alarms, pissing off your neighbors every now and then, then this car is for you.

You're going to spend a boat load of money...might as well invest some time in actually seeing as many cars as you can. Trust me, with this economy and where we are headed, there are certainly going to be more deals to be had in the coming months. Time is on your side.

I know a guy that has a Superformance for sale. 600+ HP. Set up for racing and is street legal. He has had half a dozen guys look at it and told then that he would not sell it to them because, in his opinon, they did not have enough knowlage of HP cars to be driving one. He said that if something happened that he would feel responsable knowing that they did not have the driving experiance. His car, his decision.
Have you ever driven a high hp skateboard before?

Good luck finding what you want.
Terry

Take a deep breath and step away from the check book. There are lots of kits out there, and lots of configurations. It can quickly get very confusing if you don't have a plan. This is not like buying a classic Mustang or Camaro, where' they all started out essentially the same. Put 50 Cobras together in one place, and none of them will be alike under the skin.

Before looking at specific cars, you need to narrow your search down a little. The first real question is, exactly which Cobra do you want? Street, FIA, early small block, 427SC? They're all Cobras, and they're all available.

The second question is, how important is originality? Some replicas are a spot on duplicate of an original car. And some are not. Some are way off, and some are pretty close.

Then you have to start looking at what you want in a car. Some kits like the FFR can use stock Ford parts. That makes repairs easy. Some kits use more exotic parts, like a Jag rear. That can sometimes make repairs a little more difficult. Som kits have IRS as an option, and some don't.

I would Start by listing your absolute requirments, and your preferred options. Then contact the kit makers that meet your requirements and get their info packets. Once you've decided on a couple of kits you like, you can start shopping for what you want.

Also, you might consider having a pro builder put one together to your specs. A bit more expensive, but if you have special desires it's easy to accomodate.
