Thinking of heat shield for Sidepipes
Hello All,
I am thinking of purchasing the heat shield for the sidepipes. My question is do they really work to prevent burns ????? |
Yes the do help but I hated the looks of them so took them off.
1 suggestion if you buy them, under the pipe clamps that secure them put some fiberglass matting to prevent scuffing. Marc |
I agree, I hate the looks of them, so here is what I did.
Purchased two small welding blankets (approx. 15''x15") , attached a small strap to each blanket and then attached the strap (with a snap buttom) on the inside of the car near the door thresholds. The blanket is rolled up and tucked between the seat and the door opening when not being used. If a person that wants protection from the heat of the pipe while entering or exiting, they simply unroll the blanket over the hot exhaust pipe. It works perfectly and costs only about $15.00 for the entire set-up. The blankets can be purchased at any welding supply company. Bill |

They help, but don't prevent burns. My daughter still burned her leg. Probably not as bad with out them. The problem with my shields, the clamp towards the rear is right where you step out of the car. It transfers all the heat right to the shield.
I bought my car with them on. I had one break and was going to leave them off, but the coating is all messed up under the clamps. Although my only "real world" experiance was the side pipes on my Vette.
I noticed that getting in and out of the Cobra my calf would get fried so I will run heat shields. It's real awkward trying to keep your leg out that far and I don't bend as well as I used to...%/ I've lost some skin on the darn jack hooks a couple times now too, so I'm putting over-riders on instead. |
I made a set and they don't look bad. They are flat black like the sidepipes and I've had no burns to date, same for my passengers. Check my gallery.

Learn to enter and exit the car like Scooter says and you won't get burned anymore.
Step into car with both feet standing up. Sit down into seat. Getting out is the reverse. Your legs don'e get close to the pipes anymore. With a top on it's a little more difficult. Crawl into car head first putting your knees on the seat. Rotate to a sitting position. Always instruct first time passenger the proper methods as well. Looking under the hood with shorts on will still get you. Heat shields won't help with that anyways. |

Isn't there some theory of evolution that would suggests you only get burned once....and that's it! Only with the charred flesh comes true enlightenment! I'm with patrickt!

Getting in and out of a Cobra as you would a regular car is a guaranteed burn. I've seen cars with the heat shields on, and they seem to still get hot enough to burn skin. Depending on what type of shields you get, you can get a nice "pattern" to your burn, like with the slotted type :p

These heat shields were made by Stainless Steel Specialties. They have saved many a leg and look as good, or better, than the pipe/muffler alone (IMO).

I am used to getting in and out of mine without getting burned - but - the hot side pipe is a great excuse to help or even pick up and place a lady in the passenger seat.

Luckily, I've only been burned one time. I was opening the hood and my ankle touched the pipe. It's become pretty automatic to plant my feet and step over the pipes. I ususally just tell passengers to stay put until I can come over and help them out.
The heat shields are fine if you already have them, but like Scott said, you can still get burned. |
The Hushpower sidepipe muffler, which is a subsidiary of Flowmaster, is a slightly quieter muffler and, according to their technology section of their website, their exterior muffler surface temperatures are reduced.
I have "tested" mine out yet by touching them, but it was a major reason for my choice. |

Ive been told my many that the heat shields dont prevent burns they just make a prettier burn pattern! I always remind my passengers so none have been burned yet. Me, I get zapped every so often.

I have the Backdraft shields with all the holes in them, look OK, let the heat out and they don't seem to get very hot...best idea is to learn to stand up when getting out, people around will stare at your athletic ability....my wife hasn't learned yet, so I go around and open her door, just like when we were dating...makes her smile
