302 Stroker build
I might be buying a 1970 302 from a guy at work, never been rebuilt. I have thoughts of stroking it to a 331 or a 347. He also has a extra set of 302 heads with 351W valves installed.
What's the advantage of the 351 valves in these heads, make it breathe better? Also wondering if they'd be a good match for either the 331 or 347? He supposed to be getting me the head casting numbers tonight.
Not sure what cam I would use yet, any suggestions? I'm looking for about 350 HP, driven on the street only, no racing.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You don't want to build a stroker (either a 331 or 347) and then kill it's performance potential by putting poor flowing heads on it - that's the whole reason for stroking the motor. There are SO many good heads out there for that application -AFR, Trick Flow, Brodix. A set of AFR 165's are perfect for a 331 - that's what I have on my Keith Craft 331. Plenty of power, great on the street, really nice sound.

No reason not to go with the 347 vs. 331. More cubes, more power.

Check your build cost before you buy anything. Machine work is the budget killer. Local builders here (Santa Cruz) were more expensive that buying a pre-built stroker from Keith Craft or Coast High Performance.
Just a thought.

Thats exactly what I was thinking driving home from work. I think I'll just sit back and run some numbers before I do anything.
Time to go check out the Keith Craft website.
Thanks!

I did a 68 302 block stroked to 331 with AFR 185 heads. 3.25 Scat forged crank, JE pistons with a 1.250 piston height that were for a 351, and Crower Sportsman rods at 5.315". No wrist pin in the oil ring!

Juggernaut: I have a spreadsheet that I made apple to apple comparisons on 302 based engines for my FIA. PM me with your email if you want me to send you a copy.
