Default Vintage Black Plates on my Cobra

Good evening to all.
I would like to ask if anyone in California known how can register sixties lisence plates on my cobra?

I have a CSX and the tile reads 1965 Shelby cobra VIN CSX 4896

I went to DMV and all was fine until the clerk found in the computer that there was no information as to what color plates were on cars in 1965.

Any information would be appreciated

Thank You.
Ricardo

Ricardo,

CA plates from 1965 are black with yellow letters. Legally, you can only apply plates to a car that was originally sold in that year.

The DMV would only be able to issue new plates, regardless of the year of the car.

Illegal - and you have to have it shipped to someone out of state - but here's where I got mine. Er ... I mean, where one could get one ... if they wanted to do something illegal.

When I had the CHP inspection for the SB-100 I asked the cops if I could use the black plate with the CSX # I had made.
They told me it was technically illegal but they look at the tags and the number and could really care less what color the plate is. As long as its a reconizable CA plate.
Thats just what they told me..

You may also want to take a look at the way your car is titled in California.

Here's what you do. Get a personalized plate to match what you want ie CSX 4XXX, you can go on the DMV website to see if it's avail, then take the plates to a decent body shop and have them paint it Black with Yellow letters. Voila.

Also tons of old plates are avail on Hemmings that can be reregistered.

A WORD TO THE WISE, If your registering your car as a 1965 Ford or Cobra or '65 anything your commiting fraud. you should be on a SB 100 reg. that will read year 0000. Check SB 100 threads on this site for more info.

Check that. You can't apply/re-register a vintage plate to a car unless the car is of that vintage (i.e. You buy a 1965 Mustang that has new plates. You can buy vintage black/yellow plates and change your registration to match the plates).

You can't put real vintage plates on a replica.
