I have 565 ftlbs, and it doesn't seem to be too much. Sure, I can smoke 'em at will. But I can also NOT smoke 'em at will. Seems very controlible to me. Wouldn't be afraid of a few more, probably would miss them if I had a few less.

I tell everyone that this is a taxi motor.

I started with a block from the early 70's that I got for free. I have a friend that is an engine builder so he put some good used parts aside for me including a Comp cam, lifters, and a set of Wisco pistons. I added a set of Ford "M" stock car heads with Ford roller rockers, an Edelbrock dual plane intake, and a 750 Holley. The engine was professionally built and dynoed at 472 HP and 442 or 444 lbs of torque using my own carb and a set of mufflers.

The surprising thing about this engine is the sound. Even the engine builder can't understand why it has the sound that it does. I think that it is a combination of the cam he used and the "M" heads.

Dynoing with mufflers attached is the honest approach. And those are nice numbers as well.

Thank you Patrick

The engine builder expected to achieve about 435 HP because I wanted a dual plane intake for better low end response. He thought that we could get about 30 more HP with a single plane intake but even he was surprised when we got 472 HP. The intake and exhaust runners were cleaned up but the heads were not ported. However some work was done in the combustion chambers mainly to test the results on the flow bench before working on some race heads for a dirt modified car. This guy really knows how to squeeze the power out of SBF's and SBC's.

Pman...you can bump up your power pretty good with heads and a bit more squeeze. here are some of my 351W combos the past ten years.
Here's a dyno sheet with my 351W comparing both a Stealth and V-jr intake.
This set up is a rebuilt FMS 385/351W with 11:1 forged Ross pistons, .576L roller cam, TEA ported Brodix 58cc milled , 190 cc runner heads. With the old flat tappet cam and GT40X heads ported, milled to 11.25:1 the motor made 376rwhp. After the rebuild and roller cam it made 386rwhp. A budget route for you might be AFR 185's milled to 58cc's for 11:1 and I bet you'd make 400 to the tire. www.totalengineairflow.com makes the ported 190cc Brodix ST5.0 heads with 2.02 vales that flows 300 @ .6L for which I paid around $1900 minus rockers. The gain going to the Brodix heads from fully ported GT40X heads despite lessening compression .25 (58cc vs. 56cc's) was 419-386 or
a gain of 33RWHP. Just porting the GT40X heads on the stock 385/351W netted a 43rwhp gain from stock 334rw to 376RWHP . The TQ factor is not as high as the HP with these milder set ups which still does allow for foot control in 1st/2nd gears. Again...these were my preferences and experinces. I hope this helps as you consider mods to your 385/351W.

Except for my required rebuild due to a faulty BG carb, much of this can be done leaning over your hood. Figure 385-400 to the tire with good heads and 2 more points of squeeze (93 octane all that is required). If you want to run with the bigger dogs add a 100 shot for 3rd/4th gears. A couple of us did these 351W mods and have dynoed 485-500 RW spraying on the dyno. You're talking about 4 grand for all but it's only a few days of work in the garage.

I love the motor in the SPF, but it is almost impossible to hook up. I am thinking of going to some drag radials on the rear for some more traction. Even though it is probably over kill for the street, I would not change anything. It is a great running motor, and has a much nastier cam than the 427R.
yeah, buy the drag radials. It's the best thing I ever did.

How much is too much? When you can't hook up no matter how fast you are going. Cheers.

Yep, M/T 315s here.. you can't have too much traction. It also helps with that pesky 'Busa eggin' ya on at the stop light too..

btw... 469/480 rwhp/tq SAE corrected AIN'T ENOUGH

I think 889rwtq is just about enough, with 3.08 rear gears and drag radials it hooks well in 2nd gear and up. The turbo's boost comes on smooth and lets the cars weight transfer to plant the tires. I am using 5 speed TKO tranmission from MMR with Mcleod street twin clutch. I think that it is more important how your car is setup than how much power your car makes.

I think some key points and details are not mentioned or considered in this thread. Like the trans type and gear rations, header size, type of muffler, type of aircleaner, the rear end, eg. running a 3.x to a 4.y is a hugh difference. So it's not just engine dyno HP and torque, but the complete package needs to be part of your considertion.... e.g., trans, rear end, tires, CAM, what you want to do with the car, drive style, and actual HP/torque to the rear tires to the road. I just had my DART 351w block, 427ci dyno'd.... it was ~560 torque at 4400 RPM and 563 HP at 6500 RPM.... but that means little for now until you add all the moving parts and the air restrictions metioned above. I'll have a JAG IRS rear end with a 3.73 posi traction and a TKO600 with a .82 5th gear. Once I get the car complete, I'll have it dyno'd to see what's put on the road. Depends on your tires, but I think that if you can smoke the tires just off idle then you are probably close.

I know that this thread is on TQ but I think the words of the immortal Mark Donohue work here as well: "it will never have enough power until I can spin the wheels at the end of the straightaway in high gear." He said this talking to engineers about the Porche 917-30 which had variable boost to adjust the power from 1100hp to 1500hp. The car only weighed 1871.7 lbs!
YeeeeHaaaa!!!!

I don't know how much my motor has. I know I can fry the tires ALL the way through 1st and 2nd and start getting traction around 80-85 mph,,,, with SLICKS! So, it's enough.

Interesting thread.

I had my stroked 392 with 500hp for 7 years and i realised i needed more power.

Keith Craft just finnished for me a stroked 445ci, Dynoed at 636hp and 613 ftlbs should have it in the car within 2 weeks, so im hoping this will cure my NEED problem.

It's been fun to revisit this post. Again, you guys are hilarious! You may have put two and two together from a more recents thread that I have started. I've got a 408w shortblock with 4340 internals, ordered the Keith Craft signature Brodix 210 heads and misc. parts (waiting on these items...come on Lance...put them on the truck!) Comp cam 35-427-08 which has 242 248 579 600, 10:1 compression, victor jr. intake. I also picked up the 402 style headers, have talked to Performance Engineering and Full throttle about sidepipes and swapping my TKO 500 to aTKO 600 with .82 overdrive. I figured I should be easily 550hp and maybe a little less torque at the flywheel. All the parts are new and were purchased from people that changed there plans meaning I saved substantially with the exception of my order from Keith Craft (Come on Lance put in some overtime and get the parts on the truck!) Don't take it personal Lance. I'm like a child on xmas morning. Can't wait!
