Tremec Noise
There is a whirring noise that seems to be coming from the transmission while in 4th/5th gear. The noise is moderate and can only be heard while the car is under partial load . The noise has been there since I bought the Cobra 1 year ago. The transmission fluid has been checked. Is this a normal noise for a Tremec 5-speed??

I had a similar noise turned out to be the drive shaft yoke vibrating in the tail housing
These noises can be tuff to figure since the noise can travel

Thanks Bobby. The only problem is I don't hear the noise in 3rd gear under partial load. How did you track it down to the yoke. You have one heck of an avatar.

Rick, Thanks for taking the time to discuss the variables that I am facing . I guess the first thing to do is find out trans or diff? Once I get that sorted I can make better decisions. When I got it figured out I'll let you know.

could be simple harmonics from gear mesh, and to tell you the truth I would not worry about it unless it is generating a vibration.

madmax, Thanks for the reply. I hope you are right but I still want to look into it a little. Rick L thinks it may be the T5. I once ignored an issue with the car and got to tow it home .

if you must, determine the number of teeth on the 4 th and 5th gears, then have a vibration teck ride with you, he will tell you in minutes if it is in the trans or rear end, bearing etc. problem is you have to have access to the vibration tech, may want to look at junior colleges if you do not know someone in industry.

madmax, I didn't know that there was such a thing as a "vibration teck". It sounds like something out of an erotic toys factory . Is there really such a thing? I'm talking with Brent Lykins of B2 Motorsports just to try to get some idea of the cost of replacing the t5 under the worst case scenario. I'm hoping that it is not a great issue as you mentioned in your previous post. There is all kinds of vibration in the car compared to my Jaguar but nothing that I can lay to the transmission. Thanks for your help in this.

In the petrochemical industry we employ about 4 techs per sight. Every gearbox, turnbine, mixer, motor is monitored. If you identify the bearings in your transmission and rear end, gears and number of gears per gear. Remove the shift boot on your transmission so the tech can place his probe on your transmission while you are driving he will tell you exactly what component is generating the noise in under 5 minutes. To test the differential he may be able to rig a probe since it is not real accesible from inside the car at 55 mph.
Option two is to let everyone guess what the problem is and only by the grace of God and alot of luck will you find it without spending alot of money.

I wish I could type, number of teeth per gear. All this information is readily accessible via the manufacturer.
