I need a quick answer for a motor
I was discussing a motor trade with a guy for some furniture that I build.This is waht he has as far as a trade and I wanted to see if it was a good deal.
He says it came out of a 79 merc.
I need an answer pretty quick if someone can help me
This is the email that he ssent me:
"I have a 351W with a stock 2 barrel intake and carb and an aftermarket intake and holley 4 barr"

For a Cobra, I would rather have an empty engine bay and some hand crafted furniture in my living room. |

it is actually outdoor furniture,adirondack chairs to be exact.
So is this a good deal for a motor as far as rebuilding something.

Honestly it's hard to tell. I would be willing to risk about a grand on it, but not much more than that absent knowing what the condition of the engine is on the inside. If it's in decent shape, you could make a nice motor out of it. |

I wont have anything hardly in the intial investment except a few dollars in lumber and about 8 hours labor.
So I will be able to put around $1000-$1500 for the rebuild and get a great motor is my plan.

If it's in decent shape that would easily be doable. And if it's not, you could dump most of it on E-bay and at least break even. |

I also got an offer on a 460 out of an f100,what do you think about that one.

All things being equal, I would take a 351W over a 460. Others may differ on that, though. |

I know I like the 351w better,but I see alot of people with the 460 big block in it.I think I will go with the 351w though unless someone chimes in

I don't know about SC but in my area, a good running 351W is worth no more than $500. I picked up mine for $50. It was a standard bore with new heads. I rebuilt the motor and sold the heads for $100.

People around here get anywhere from $300-$500 for them.Normally you have to rebuild those. $50 would be an awesome deal.

Does it matter if it came out of a Merc though? I am assuming just being a 351w it doesnt matter if it comes out of a merc or ford?

If it's in decent shape, a couple of hundred bucks doesn't matter -- that coming from an FE man... (just add another zero) On some of our cars, stuffing a 385 series under the hood can hamper your foot boxes, so keep that in mind if you go with the 460. |

in my experience, you will spend more on the rebuild and replacing old worn out parts than you would on a nice short block or long block. I think a motor like that will likely cause you headaches.

Another thing to think of. If you already have your transmission and bell housing and it is for an FE engine, the 385 series won't bolt up to it. They have a different bolt pattern. A friend of mine got caught in that trap when he bought a 429 to replace a 390. By the time he got the correct bell housing and had everything straight, he had spent way more than he gained.

No I havent gotten a trans yet.I was going to get the engine and then pick up a trans,which trans should I be on the look out for to mate up to a 351w?

sell
sell the furniture and buy a crate motor. It's a LOT cheaper.

How many miles on the engine? Was it in running condition? One of the best engines I ever had had was 351W out of a wrecked truck from the salvage
yard. I tore in down and put bearings and rings and gaskets ,an intake and
a nice cam and had a really good engine......of course I was lucky ,but I was
po boy back then ! lol .How much are your chairs worth? Save up and get you
a crate engine if you can. If not, then take a chance and throw the dice.

My chairs sell for $200 a set,but costs me about $50 to make.As far the motor,one of them has 56000 on it and the other one not real sure of.As far as a crate motor,I would like to have the satisfaction of building one on my own and saying that I built it. thats my thing.I may be rolling the dice as you said,if so and I get a bad deal,then I wait and do the crate motor.As far as sitting or running it is still in the car,one of them is anyways.The other is sitting in a building in the corner with all the parts on it and it comes with a 4 bbl and an aftermarket intake.
As of now though,I really want the satifaction of building my own motor,I will need some help and advice along the way,but I think at some time everyone has. Thanks

I have never seen ANY book that tells you everything you need to do or know to build a motor. If you insist on building one yourself, at lease have someone standing by (that has built motors) to give you advise and to let you know if you are straying in the wrong direction. Anyone that builds motors always had to build their first one. I have built many motors and what you learn on the first one will live in your brain forever.
I am not saying that you (or anyone) cant build your first motor on your own.
