What little I know about it doesn't seem to indicate it is a race engine. The motor is reported to be a stockish 1989 5.0HO long block, not EFI but a simple Edelbrock manifold and small (500CFM) Edelbrock carburetor--not exactly exotic race stuff there.

Too many of you have reported 5th gear highway RPM's in the range I would have expected, the gentleman must have been mistaken about the gear he was running in. He does live right in the middle of Dallas, TX, so perhaps he was in 4th.

That would be the my hope for the way things turn out.....I'll have to drive that thing 300 miles to get it home and eventually over 800 miles to get it to my retirement home.....not exactly a happy prospect with 4,000 RPM's exiting through sidepipes less than 3' from your ears! He does say that at road speeds he can hear the sound system, so.........perhaps the tach is out of calibration?

Thanks, guys....maybe I won't need to go to the expense of changing out the rear pumpkin after all. that would make me !!

I have 4.56's in the rear and a .56 O/D. Cruises at just about 2300 at 70 mph. The 4.56's are about to be gone and 3.90's installed. That should drop it another 300 RPM at 70.

I know he knows it's a 5 speed. When I emailed him, mentioning how much higher RPM he was claiming than most report, he responded thus:

"Doug,

I rarely take the Cobra out on the highway, so my estimation was a guess."

I'm feeling much better about this all the time, with numbers like those reported by Joyridin' I'm sure my contact must be mistaken. According to my calculations, our final drive ratios would be in the same general range (his 4.56 X .56 OD = 2.55 final ratio, my 3.70 X .68 OD = 2.51 final ratio), so I'm expecting numbers pretty close to those reported in Joyridin's post above.

Obviously driven very sanely then.

In my car I know exactly how many rpm's I'm turning and what speed I'm going when I hair out and back off of the throttle!

Default A Suggestion...

YerDugliness -- as a general rule, most owners of Cobras kinda know their car, and know things like RPMs at different speeds, and even take it out on the highway. Remember, not everybody tells the truth when selling a used Cobra. Sooooo, keep you eyes open and don't get swept away by the allure of the deal. There are plenty of Cobras out there and if you start to feel like you're not getting the full scoop, then you're probably not.

Well yep thanks for all the inputs, I'll keep my 2.75 rear end and work on improving engine breathing in/out to improve that response...my wiffie and I are planning some leisurely long travels and she ALREADY thinks my car is too lound even with the restrictive baffles (that I'm going to enlarge)....what price a noise cancelling set of BOSE earphones for her??

3:91 gears and 65MPH at about 3300 RPM. Has great acceleration from that range.

My first thought, exactly......and they aren't, the photos show a fairly typical Cobra profile, no "donut" spares on that Ford 9" rear end--real meaty things, they are.

I asked how accurate the speedometer is, he said: "The speedometer is relatively accurate."

Like others, I suspect that he was in 4th.....will verify for sure Wednesday PM.

Thanks for the help, guys.....if this thing really is spinning at 4K at 70 mph, well, that rear gear's way lower than a 3.70!!!!!!!!

I'm at about 2900 at 70 MPH (give or take) with 3:31's in a toploader. Makes good power and gets fair MPG. No OD in this beast.

MY enjoyable highway cruise RPM is whatever keeps me in front of that vehicle in the next lane!!! lol !!!

1900 RPM @ 80 MPH, 3.27 gears, T5 with .64 OD, 351W

3:46 x .064 OD @ 2050 rpm = 80 mph. but thats just me in mine

351W, close ratio T-5 with .82 OD, and a 3.50 9" rear, I turn 1850 at 65 mph with all the power I want to spare. No sense screaming down the road at 2800+ RPM.

With a 1:1 5th gear (Doug Nash 4+1), 2.36 in the rear and 335x35x17's....66 MPH at 2000 and 72 MPH at 2200. Nice cruising, somewhat decent gas mileage and still plenty of torque to accelerate. Can actually hear the passenger and not much hearing damage.

.64 OD and 3.73 gives me 2400 rpm at 80 mph and 21 mpg on the highway. If your traffic is stuck around 60 mph though, you're high in 4th because the rpm's are too low (1800)for 5th.
Unless the track has a really long straight, I can keep it in 4th and never need 5th on the track. It's just for the highway.
