Default How to plumb surge tank

Old setup - filler line, right below radiator cap on my RADIATOR, was plumbed to my overflow tank.

New setup - filler line, right below radiator cap on my SURGE tank, is plumbed to my overflow tank

Question - What do i do with the old filler line on my radiator? The line sits below my surge tank, so coolant will pour out of it (from gravity) unless I some how plug it.

Suggestions?

Default surge tank plumbing

rtstrack, without more details or pics, I have to assume your surge tank is highest point in the system. I will also assume its not a full flow surge tank (like original Cobras ) but a partial flow type. The partial flow type surge tank should have a large 5/8" or 3/4" Fill line that exits the bottom of the surge tank and connects to the low pressure side of the rad or lower hose (suction side of pump). The surge tank should have your rad cap on top if its the highest point of your system or above the level of radiator.

The overflow line on the rad cap neck on surge tank, is connected to the catch can or expansion reservoir. Now a good de-gas system will also include a 3/8 line from the very top of the low pressure side of rad (outlet tank) to the top of surge tank at one end of the surge tank, this allows air/coolant mix to rise up to the surge tank from top of rad to contain or trap the air in surge tank until its purged via the vent line to the expansion / catch can during hot/cold cycles. Pics of your set-up would sure help here.

If you use a higher pressure cap on the radiator than on the surge tank, it shouldn't leak coolant. Plumb the overflow on the surge tank to the catch bottle.

Correct the surge tank is the highest point of the system. The surge tank, must be the original FULL setup, because there is only one filler line (right under the rad cap), like i had mentioned. There are NO additional holes i'm leaving out. One on the surge tank and one on the top of my radiator. Great idea about the caps, they are currently both 16 lb caps. I will go with a higher pressure cap on the radiator in hopes to keep the coolant from pouring out of the filler line. Thanks

Question Any chance of a geeting a couple of pictures on this?

rtstrack Any chance of getting a couple of pictures on this? You are saying surge tank, do you mean overfill tank or is this something different? 16 psi cap are high enough. If there is a nipple on the radiator filler neck and it is lower than the Filler tank on the motor, cap it. There should be just 1 line going from the filler tank to the overfill tank. If working correctly when the motor is hot, the coolant expands and goes into the over fill tank. When the motor cools off, the vacuum sucks the coolant back into the fill tank. You may have to go to a 18 psi cap on the radiator for this system to work right. Get a couple of pictures if you can Rick L.
