Default Oil Change -- With Cooler.

Question; What is the best way (you have found) to do an oil change in your cobra with a oil cooler setup, clearing out the oil in the cooler as well.

(without painting the floor exxon-valdez brown.)

Panavia:
Make a mess.... unless you have a special valve installed in the oil cooler lines, disconnect both lines and use very low pressure and blow it out. I know of no other way unless 'unhooking and removing' then turn it up side down.

Ignore the fact that you have an oil cooler and just drain it out of the pan the same way you always do. FWIW, if you send your oil out for analysis, an oil cooler will put trace metals in your oil (it's harmless, but good to know).

I did the same as Patrickt suggests. The oil cooler and lines don't hold that much and unless you have a suspicion that there is some metal in the oil, I wouldn't bother with it. Besides I liked leaving that little bit in there as it was just enough to give the new oil some color and make it easier to see on the dipstick.

Lightbulb Leave it alone, UNLESS

PANAVIA Steve the 2/3 of a quart of oil that is in the lines and cooler will be fine, UNLESS is have cooked the oil. The best thing for you to do is after the oil change is to open the oil filter and look for metal in it. Also check the magnetic drain plug if your motor has one. If no metal is found, change filter and oil. If metal is found, you may want to look in the oil pan pull it down for any more damage. I don't know how hard you drive your car but catching possible damage in the motor will save thousands. Window the block with a rod and you have a 50/50 chance it can be welded. It's alot cheaper to replace bearings, resurface a crank, replace gaskets then to look for a whole replacement unit. JMO Rick L. Ps I do recomend that you overfill the motor 1 quart if you are running a HV oil pump.
