4 cylinder Engine in a Cobra?
I am having hard time choosing the right one, and i would like your opinion about this.
I am planing to build an AC Cobra ( MMcobra) and i want to fit a 4 cylinder engine to it, that is below 2.6lt....That kit is supposed to fit a Chevrolet Corvette 5,7l LT1 G-Kat Engine....But i am willing to rebuild the mountings of the chassis.
Of course most of you after reading this you'll think that i am crazy, let me explain: Unlike USA having a V8 or even a V6 in my country(Greece) is very expensive, you'll have to pay about 4.000$ per year to the IRS, plus the constant refueling of the car....
So, could you sugest me the best 4 cylinder engine to fit in my kit car?

Mazda MX-5 2007 all aiuminum bullet proof runs great in the Miata. 29 mpg running the he!! out of it.

They are getting a little old by today's standards, but I had an SVO years ago with a Ford 2.3 Turbo Intercooled. You could get 300 hp out of them pretty easy and they were reliable.
They may be getting hard to find now and parts may not be so common.

Find one that you can bore and stroke to a 427 Its against Cobra law to not have a better power to weight ratio than a vette'.

I agree that the MX-5 Miata engine would be a great choice.
My '91 ran like a watch for the 15 years that I had the car.
The car was even more fun after I installed the super charger kit.

I was talking to a young fellow last year who told me that there is a Saturn engine that is bullet proof. He already had a turbo on his and was in the process of changing to a bigger turbo which would give him a maximum of 23 lbs of boost. Yikes!!!!!! Anyway, he said these Saturn engine are extremely strong and can handle really big HP. I'm sorry but I don't know which model of Saturn engine he was talking about but he said all the tuner guys are aware of what this engine can do.

Some of the boat guys will know better than I , but I think that Mecrcruiser offered 2 different 4 cylinder engines. One based on the 460 head and rotating assembly and another based on the small block. I think they were aluminum blocks. I believe that FRPP offered a similar block at various times. That way you could use all the "trick" parts for a similar V8 at half the cost .It would be either a 150" small 4 or a 230" big one. With a trick head and innards either one could make some serious power.

Spitfire; as much as it pains me to suggest a GM, you may want to check this site out. Alot of specialty car guys are using ECOTEC engines these days.

I'm gonna have to vote Toyota, the 2ZZ-GE motor is strong motor that powers not only Lotus Exige/Elise but offers a factory supercharger thru TRD. It may not have the highest peak power, but it's powerband is much more usable and I'd bet most could not find a more reliable powerplant with a redline of 8400 rpms and designed to run all day at 4000. Of note, the motor was designed by Yamaha and they seem to do these kind of motors well
Also, the Honda F20/F22C1 that powers the S2000 is a great motor, but with limited production (meaning harder to find one wrecked to source the parts) and/or high cost of purchasing new from a dealer...the Toyota is cheaper to buy due to it being used in so many different models.

Why specifically a 4 Cylinder? Registration requirements?
Why not look at a rotary. Mazda RX7 series 6 twin turbo 13B. Plenty of performance in a lightweight package. Readily available as a 1/2 cut with a trans ECU and everything.

I would get a special crank made with a 1.5" stroke & use a 289/302W block etc to arrive at the 2600cc. Then you would need some very early 221 (43.5cc) heads or possibly some aftermart types with compact chamber plus pop up pistons to make 9/1 compression, plus a whole lot of other bits to join it all up. Can be done, just depends on whether you want to do it. Short stroke means rev limit could be in 5 figures with right gear.

I can make you a deal on an Austin Healy 100-4 engine. 2.6L, 90 bhp and 600 lbs of road-hugging weight! If you replace it with a V8, you'll actually lose weight...

I thought that the GM eco tec that was in the E85 coupe would be awsome in a Cobra. It was making 500 Hp with a big turbo and burning E85. Other than that, you can't go wrong with an old Ford 2.3L (I believe this was the basis for the SVO) They offer a lot of race parts for this engine, and I have seen Turbo versions in Mustangs that run the quarter in the 8's.

Another vote for the ECOTEC. In the Cobalt, it is rated at 260 hp. The 1/4 mile times are the same as my '93 Vette with an LT1 engine; 30 mpg isn't anything to sneeze about with that much potential. I understand an upgrade in blower pressure is easy and wicked! Some of the Lotus 7 (Catheram) replicas sound incredible with their side exhaust and 4 cylinders. Sounds like a neat project. Good Luck!
