New! Kirkham 427 FE Billet Flywheel Twin Clutch

As the automotive industry stinks right now, and we probably won't get a bail out, we decided to go into the dairy industry and make Swiss Cheese
In the never ending quest to remove weight from the car, Sandwich and Thomas got together yesterday and created a little more eye candy for all of us. This is our new Billet Aluminum 427 FE flywheel and pressure plate assembly. The twin-disk clutch unit is from McLeod. They didn't have an FE flywheel for the set up, so we figured we'd make one.
Removing mass from around the outside of the flywheel is more important the mass from the inside as the outside mass has a greater moment of inertia. Anyone who has driven an FE with a steel flywheel knows how nice it is to remove some of that weight. Your motor spins up MUCH faster, making it so much easier to shift gears quickly. Frankly, I can't stand to drive a car with a steel flywheel--they take way too long to rev up so you are always waiting to shift gears.

Since it is easier to put our cars on Weight Watchers than ourselves...
We figured while we were at it, we'd remove a little of the "extra" aluminum.

This is the original type set up with a steel flywheel and normal pressure plate. It weighs 65.85 pounds for a 42.09 pound savings! Our new set up is about 1/3 the weight. No wonder the original cars reved up so slowly.

41.06 pounds for the steel flywheel. This is what makes putting them on so dangerous. I am always wondering if I am going to drop it on my foot.

At 17.60 pounds, a normal aluminum flywheel is less than 1/2 the weight of the steel moster. Now you know why the aluminum ones are so popular. We recommend everyone runs an aluminum flywheel--especially if it is one of ours

42.38 pounds for the aluminum flywheel and pressure plate assembly...still quite heavy--but a vast improvement over the 65.85 pound clutch from the M1 Tank.
Our new flywheel and pressure plate set up, however, is almost 1/2 the weight of the standard "lightened" aluminum set up. Time for testing...I have a tough job, but someone has to do it.

David, that is very cool. Removing the extra aluminum from the perimeter of the circle doesn't weaken it for starter motor purposes? Or is the amount of stress put on it while cranking really just not enough to matter?

I was thinking it might look like this:
It would save weight and ...well I don't know what else it would do once it was installed, cus no one would see it. But if you think of it like a girlfriend, you know what she has under her clothes and that counts for something

Very nice work as usual!
Did my eyes deceive me or did I see sintered iron discs in that uber light assembly? Two more questions; which McLeod pressure plate is that and how much plate load does it provide.

Any concerns with strength or durability with the super light flywheel? Is it enough flywheel to idle?
