This could have happened to me a few years ago.
I had one of those glass in-line fuel filters sold by Summit, Jegs, etc. Several of my friends told me to get rid of it but I put it off. One day I fired it up and began backing out of the garage when I smelled gas. I immediately shut the engine down and got out of the car. To my horror, there was a line of gasoline from the garage down the driveway and under the car. I opened the hood and found that the glass filter had come apart and there was gas everywhere. I got out the hose and started to wash down the gas before fixing the filter and ordering a new Earl's aluminum filter. I was lucky as my engine was cold so the gas did not light on fire.
I have no idea what happened to this car but it sure looks like a gas fire and it could have been caused by a glass fuel filter. I just looked at the Summit catalog and they don't seem to carry them any more.
For anyone that has one of these glass in-line filters, get rid of it before it lets go.
