Thanks.

The photo that JRoss posted is the right set-up if you only have access to a welder. The transition (90 degree edges) can be smoothed over if done in billet, thus improving air flow/cfm. FWIW, my set-up provides about 1/4-1/2" clearance to the rear of the hood and plenty of direct airflow through the scoop. Plugs are tan...have never experienced a lean condition with this set-up.

The problem with making the proper billet base plate is cost...You need a really thick chunk of aluminum to properly whittle it to the correct specifications. A more cost effective alternative would be to billet the "hat" portion that fits over the carb and weld that to a cut out cast base. No one sees it anyway, so what the hey?

I believe reduced airflow would cause a rich condition.

An idea I had was to mill an opening in the top of the oval aircleaner and use one of those 9" round open top air cleaner lids you can buy at summit. It would add airflow directly above the carb and the wingnut would hold it all together.

You can also buy the oval open top from Summit but it doesn't say Cobra on it. It's also a few inches shorter in length.

Custom billet drop base air cleaner assemblies just sounds expensive.

Reduced air flow couldn't be any worse than a pair of Stelling & helling aircleaners. I have inline dual four Holleys on a FE engine and have a hood clearence problem. I'd like to find some sure-fire aircleaner fix.

Default drop base air cleaner

Here is the drop base that I did about a year ago. A huge increase in performance. Went back with my old air cleaner and notice a decrease in performance. Check out my gallery. Berm

Personal opinon..........less is more in the bling department. Keep the bling on the inside. But hey that is just me. No stripes. No sidepipes etc.. just a basic car. Clean with no pretense.
