I have one of these, made with the Weathershield HP material. If fits perfectly, stays on in a high wind, and is completly water proof. Expensive, but the good stuff usually is.

A high quality water proof cover will probably give you a decent amount of protection against the elements, but not 100%.
Since you're located in Northern California you shouldn't need much unless you plan to park your car outside. If have to park outside, you might want to think about a car capsule. I have no experience with them, but this one popped up in a search:

The main problem I have seen with using them around here is the wind. If they aren't fitted to the car and tight, just the least movement by wind will tend to buff the paint in those areas. I had one custom made and used it twice then sold it and got an aluminum carport to park under if I had the car out of the garage on bad days.

The WallMart unit that costs about $40.00 actually works well and if you FUBAR it, you don't feel so bad.
They are made of plastic and melt to hot side pipes.

I went with the superweave from California Car Cover. I have had good success with it on my GT500. It is 98% waterproof according to the person I spoke with. Not cheap, but good. http://www.calcarcover.com/how_to_select.aspx

A big problem with most 100% waterproof covers is that if you get any water underneath them it won't evap and can cause discoloration of your paint. I went with a breathable water repellent cover and it's worked well.

A fellow Superformance owner showed me his car cover and I liked it so much I ordered the same thing.
It's an extremely well fitting (i.e. very snug fit) waterproof cover made from NOAH material (check out NOAH material on the internet). I also purchased the optional lock and cable and the company included the storage bag at no cost.
I purchased it 5/1/09 from Big Sky Car Cover Outlet, 404 Riverview, Glendive, MT 59330. Total cost, including shipping, was $186.77. The part number is C67NH. Their phone number is 800-221-4875. Very nice folks to deal with.
And I tested the car for rain protection----------ran a garden hose and sprinkler on it for over an hour and the car was dry as a bone!

I have a California Car Cover, NOAH model.
Works just as they said it would. I sold my car a couple of years ago and put the cover in a box and keep it in the garage now. It is personalized with mu CC user-name 4RE KLR.
If I remember right it cost about $100.00. Worth every dime!
