New Jersey DMV question
Want to buy a Superformance MkIII with the Roush 511SRFE engine. I am reading all kinds of war stories about getting the car passed on all the emissions/inspections and how to register it! All I want to do is buy the car, get it registered and drive it!!! What I don't want to do is buy it in NY, get it down here to NJ and have is fail!!!
Any advise.
I have read that you need mirrors on both sides, wipers, covers over the sidepipes.

My advice: I am guessing that you are buying this from a private individual. You could hire a lawyer for about $250, have him hold the funds in escrow, get the car registered successfully, then release the funds to the seller, pick up the car.
Having said that, if the car is already titled and registered in New York, you should be in very good shape. NY, unlike some other states, provides a title with a description of the car; if that description is pretty "clean" you should have no problem registering in NJ.

Also, I am no expert, but one of the big determining factors with respect to passing inspection is what year does your car get titled as. Many times but not always, especially in New York, the car would get titled as a "1966" or "'67", for example. If that is the case, inspection is a breeze and should pass no problem.

Is the car on MSO, or is the car already titled in another state?
If it's on MSO, you need to call the NJMVS special titles division and ask for the "kit car" package. As such it will detail all of the most current rules
and regulations as to what is or what is not required. The basics are
simple, dot lights, dot windshield, side pipe covers, fuel and brake
lines routed so that if a tire would go flat that the car would be able
to ride on the bare rim(s) without the frame dragging (really!!!!) Year
of the engine block will play off on what is needed in the way of
emissions controls (IE: get a pre 1974 engine block for NJ right now).
No more collectors registrations available for kit cars of any kind, and
no before you ask, NJ safety inspections will not take a NSRA inspection in place of
the initial NJ safety inspection....Speaking of NJ safety inspection, I
highly suggest that the person in question only go to the Morristown, NJ
inspection station (appointment will need to be set when the car is
ready) as they have a clear understanding of what needs to be done when
doing an initial safety inspection is being performed, unlike Asbury
Park where the inspector changes the rules to suit his mood (serious
complex, plenty of complaints about his rewriting the rules, but no
changes out of him or his particular inspection station)............
Now,
if you are buying a car that is already titled, then the above is not an
issue at all as NJ will take the existing title at face value with
emissions based on the year of the block........
Hope you find this helpful.
Sincerely,
Bill S

Tom:
A Thread from the Registration Forum regarding NJ registration:
NJ registration
In addition to the above, the Registration Forum which might have additional Threads
http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/registration-forum/
Another possibility is to search the NJ DMV web site for kit cars, replicas, assembled cars etc. Possible, any emission requirements/testing may be on another NJ web site. Might need to still validate with the NJ DMV in case any regulations have changed since the dates of the Threads/Posting on Club Cobra.

The biggest problem in NJ is that there are many gotchas that rear their head along the process. For example it does not say in the packet that you need to submit a pencil trace of the chassis vin AND engine serial number AND transmission serial number. But they will hold your application in Trenton until you supply and you have to hound them to find it out. And they will keep asking for the "engine VIN and transmission VIN"
