Fatality in a Cobra Near Lodi California
We just heard about this accident here at the CH1 run. Hopefully it's not a member of ClubCobra or BACC. Anyone have any more information about who was involved? Condolences to the families of those involved.

Just to clarify, since I had to do a triple-take reading it before I got it right.
You heard about it at the run...the accident was NOT on the run, right?
The article indicates Stockton as the locale of the 2-car accident.

Computerworks,
Sorry for the confusion. You're correct. We heard about it at the run. It did not happen at the run.

sorry for the death.
What is it about the press that has so much difficulty in gaining access to correct information?:
"a convertible Ford Mustang Cobra kit car"
I am sorry but with the technology available today this is not acceptable.

First of all it is sad to see this happen in any circumstance with any car/s. It really is.
Second, The Shelby Corvette by what company?
Third, Why sensationalize the fact that that driver was under the influence of prescription drugs unless you're gonna come out & say what they are? They were probably just for a skin issue, had nothing to do with the crash & make the story sound headline worthy by not mentioning what the drugs are.
Do 5 minutes worth or research before you write a story, especially one as short as this.

I drove up on the accident shortly after it happened and recognized the car. He was still in the car at that time, covered by a yellow blanket on the passenger side. That worried me more as he often had his grandkids in the car. I knew him but not well. We had been to a couple of local shows together. He built a nice car and drove it often. She lost control in a hair-pin curve and slid broadside into another vehicle. I do not know the female driver. He was a good guy, sad news.
I'll post more info when known.

Sadly, stories like this are also mandatory reading for anyone thinking about getting in to this hobby. Having only read the posts and wire reports, you can envision the turn, the rear end getting loose and coming around, and the car sliding in to the opposite lane with the passenger side door area taking the brunt of the hit. Whether it was the result of heavy acceleration, or drop throttle oversteer, remains to be seen. But that scenario is a classic handling characteristic of our cars. I have pics in my gallery of skid marks on curves from exactly that type of event, and when you see them, you think to yourself "how the heck did that happen?"

Sad story. The article states that the lady driver was "accelerating through a corner." Not the smartest thing to do with these cars, especially if you're on street radials (with the exception of warmed-up Avons). Prayers to the victims and their family.

First -- My Condolences to Friends and family. --no matter the circumstances, this is a terrible thing.
Second -- two problems I have with the story
1. the ID of the Car (mentioned early on in this thread)
2. The rather parental notation on lap belts.--Sholder belts would not have given ANY added benefit here.
---Hit by a truck (albeit a light truck) on the side in a light weight car you are going to have problems. --

I don't know about that. The driver of the car is in critical condition. The quote is as follows: "Both people in the Cobra wore lap seat belts but were not wearing shoulder harnesses, the CHP said. <the driver> was thrown toward the passenger side of the car, where she struck her head on the dashboard, the CHP reported." With my four points on, I can not touch the dash with my head -- I can barely reach over and open the glove box door. I think shoulder belts would have helped the driver.

Brent,
I appreciate the concern, but I'm still dealing with a cooling fan issue. Never-the-less when a fellow Cobra owner is injured or has lost his life in his car, it hits too close to home. Here at Club Cobra I feel we're a tight knit family, this type of news just brings us closer. Everyone, please be safe . . .

Lap belts or four-point, the person on the side of impact didn't stand a chance. There is nothing between them and the front of the vehicle hitting them.
It occurred to me how horrifying it must have been to the poor guy toodling along in his SUV, to see and out-of-control convertible slam into the front of his car. He undoubtedly saw the fatal impact. Not a memory you want rattling around in your head.
The driver of the Cobra, did he have family?

Sorry to hear about this.
Chris, good to hear you were not the one. But the female driver, was this her first time behind the wheel of this type of vehicle? I would NEVER use just the lap-belt by itself. I always go with full 4 point restraint. It's sad that a passenger paid the price.
