As the instigator of these "Challenges", I feel it is my duty to notify you. They are informal, low key fun, who's fastest BS. Just to put an edge on the track time and set up a goal. Nothing but bragging rights, and an excuse to try to do better than before.

On the other hand, there is always big block/small block confrontations; East/West//North/South; the round tube/squaretube frame deal; the my mfg is better than yours and its sub set REALSHELBIE4000 vs replica (thanks Evan) conflagration; red/blue/silver//stripes/no stripes; Cobra/Lister/Cheeter/GrandSport; and the best one of all...........Ribs n' beer / TNT's and quiche.

With all these possibilities, you carve out your litle corner, and everybody win's. EX: Best bigblock squaretube ERA red nonstriped beer drinker with a spare clutch, in the joint.

So choose your weapon and stand your ground.

Jim, they did not check the db level last year, but at the end of the day saturday, greg lapoint and I were told that they were going to set up the meter on sunday. Our plan was to push the clutch in on the way by, but it rained all day anyway. Don, All in good fun, here goes. Being a chicago boy, lots of AA members or soon to be members in the family, my drinking ability is a better bet than my driving ability, so I'll buy the first few rounds. One caveat though, you have to whip me on the race track! Oops, thats right, you have the big block, so I am an at a big disadvantage. Never the less, challange excepted, for bragging/drinking rights only, of course. scott

I can't wait till those West Coast boys get a look at the Club Cranky gang. You guys did see Deliverence didn't you? I really like that Ned Beatty guy.
I may have to wash out my bib overalls for this trip.
We'll let ol'e Don Durner handle the track challenge the rest of us all have trouble standing upright.
I sure hope we get a good turnout All we need is about 20 or so good time guys.
Everybody that is coming keep us posted as it is a long way off.

Default Have engine - will travel?

I'm planning to be there. Plans are to have a motor in early spring. The trip has been cleared with the wife as long as we take the car ferry across Lake Michigan. Keep me informed of car/safety requirements. I'd like to get a head start on that stuff.

I doubt I can keep up with you on the track (I hate to lose so I'll probably be doing some cultivating), but both me & my wife will give you guys a run for your money in the beverage area.

Question The ferry

Dave,
Does taking the ferry across Lake Michigan save any time going to WI from the East coast?
Also about how much does it cost for the ferry figuring a pickup pulling a trailer?

I took the Lake Michigan ferry a few years ago and found that you do not save any time as opposed to going around Chicago especially when you allow for the time waiting for the ferry, loading and then unloading, etc. On the other hand, it was a pleasant ride and I did enjoy the break.

I don't remember the toll but I found the schedule and rates on the net.

If your primary purpose is to save time and money, then the ferry probably is not worth it. If you enjoy a boat ride and wish to avoid the Chicago traffic, then I would recommend it.

I thought I would show up just to bug Cranky, but then I hear about JM and fairies. I knew he was a closet waxer but was unaware of his other closet interests. I have not been to Road America in several years, but it is a nice area and the brats are great. Bring insect repellant as the state bird is the mosquito. Rich Pickles will probably come also, as he has run the event several times in the past, and he can use his nitrous on the straights to keep up with all those fast small blocks.

Default Club Cranky reunion?

We can't seem to get the racers to show up at our local track(Watkins Glen) so we deceided to meet them half way across the country and it seems to be catching on. All are welcome to Club Cranky.
JM ,see what you started,now even the Run and Gunners want to see what we are all about. Boy are they going to be disappointed.
Six cars and thirty five drinkers.
Here is a our racing stable,
One BB ERA with clutch problems DD
One Contemporary with sb and over the hill driver RD
One FFR 347 with almost over the hill driver HD
One FFR supercharged ,driver too busy chasing the wimmens TS
One Mustang 377ci or 351 FIA Contemporary? Entertainer JM
One Mustang driven by guitar player/singer NG
One Cheetah (maybe) Traveling chef BC
Many bottles of adult beverages
And lots of good food

See you all at Elkhart Lake in Sept. 2002

It was that damn raki, it made you look so cute in the firelite . The only other time I hade to look at your butt was when I caught you ontrack and waited for your point-by. Your wiggling the rear of the McMustang had no hidden meaning did it? I was scared too. Everytime I went to sit in your car to bleed the brakes, there was some sort of "protruberance" in the seat!!! You claim it's your 6th harness, butt i don't buy that at all.

Default The "Boat" (not ferry, to avoid confusion)

Cranky;
Sorry about the late response. I was earning engine money over the weekend.
The "boat" would not save any time or money for you guys. Mrmustang hit it on the head. It takes 4 hours each way. It would cost about $400 round trip with a trailer. For me, I'm closer, have no trailer - $300 round trip, and a wife who has always wanted to take the "boat" across. You guys would gain nothing more than some time to relax, have some drinks, and a ride across a lake. I can't wait!
Whenever someone gets a list of rules/requirements, please post here. Are BFG Comp T/A's good enough, single hoop roll bar, etc.?

FEZ,

That protuberance you speak of in the seat is actually an alternate HANS device that is approved by the GMCC (you'll have to ask Cranky what the abbreviation stands for ). It drfinitely keeps me from wiggling in the seat and also puts an extra beeg smile on my face while on the course. Usually after you guys have gone to bed at the Seneca, I'll sneak back into the track for some extra...."seat time"!

Dave,
Thanks for the info on the ferry trip. The price is a little steep and 5 hours is a long trip on the boat. I am not a great fan of water travel so I think we will skip the ferry and take our chances with Chicago traffic.
When you show up at the track look for the"Club Cranky" banner and the large group of rowdy racer types. That's us.

Cranky, tech is at 4:00p.m. on thursday so you would be going thru the chicago area after 9:00 a.m. and before 3:00p.m., less traffic. I am sure you have some sort of big block/boat motor towing vehicle that will get you there on time. scott

Scott,
Thanks for the tip on the traffic situation. And yes I do have a BB 444 CI torquemonster Turbo Diesel. Fastest tow vehicle in NJ. Just ask the "Club Cranky" members who can't keep up.
I wonder if I can put that engine in my Cobra. Like they say no replacement for displacement.I do have a 351W in my service truck and it can't keep up with the Diesel but it does corner better.

Default Straightaway speeds

I just looked at the Road America track layout. Am I correct in seeing that long straightaway as being over 3/4 mile long? Does that mean go as fast as you dare? You should be able to achieve "take flight" speeds in that distance.
Maybe some of you guys that have been there with your aerodynamically challenged replicas can let us know how you dealt with this stretch and what kind of speeds you attained.
I'm getting exited just thinking about it!
