CSX3170 at Scottsdale Goodguys
We took 3170 to Scottsdale for the first event of the year to see how my winter changes worked out. I changed the rear end ratio to a 4.27, redid the front caliper mounts to better fit my floating brake rotors, upped the rear spring rate to 750 lb/", rebuilt the power steering rack and slightly changed the alignment for the event. We are trying to get a handle on what the best set up is for the Shoot Out next November. The car worked perfectly even though it was on some very worn tires from last year that were so bad we finally had to replace them Saturday at noon. The car was turning 8200 at the finish line so gearing is perfect for the tight little Goodguys courses. I modified the throttle body by disconnecting the secondaries because it would blow the tires off as soon as they started to open. The car is much easier to drive now and actually faster on the tiny Goodguys course because Scott can precisely modulate the throttle.
We are trying to run the Goodguys event in Pleasanton on the 19th and 20th of March but I am having eye surgery on this Thursday so have to see how that works out. The car was in first place from the first run to the last and pretty much dominated the field so we are happy. I just got new Bridgestone RE71 R and Rival S tires so the car should be a second faster next time out. We are very happy with the handling now, both power down and turn in are excellent. We are going to try Bridgestone RE71-R 285x30x18's in April to see if we can get more front end grip and reduce our rake angle. I will post the video of a run or two as soon as it is up on YouTube.

On another thread on this forum, a guy was asking if two four barrel carbs were better than one. It appears that a two barrel carb is plenty under some circumstances. ... I really enjoyed watching the run.

I love seeing that car run!
Are all the Goodguys' courses identical layout?

Thanks Tony,
Each course is different but the ones in Scottsdale are very similar and that is the one that counts so we have set up the car around Scottsdale trying to finally win the big one. They have an insurance mandate to keep speeds down
so courses are slower than SCCA course's. Throttle body can flow about 825 cfm so we are probably about 700 - 750 crank HP. We are pulling 1.31 G cornering loads on last years tires so our set up this year is good. I should have an in car video in a day or so. I am really happy with the floating brake rotors we finally got rid of pad knockback.

When I lived in Colorado I always went to the Good Guys up in Loveland and they had their course set up. Since you seem to be going to a lot of these I wondered if they were uniform so that tuning for one would work for the others. Didn't you drop in on that one last year or the year before? It used to be in June but now Sept.

I got to talk to Scott about 3170 after a run and man, is he one enthusiastic driver! Thanks for taking time out of your busy race day to talk to a fan.
I took these during a morning practice session on Saturday, probably the run before the tires got replaced.

Yes, we did stop in Colorado on the way home from the National championships in Nebraska last year. Scott had to be at work Monday so we made some runs and left Friday at noon. Scott's time from Friday was never beat but because we could not be there Sunday the award was given to another car that ran Sunday.
Surfaces vary and some courses are much faster but we are trying to optimize the car for Scottsdale so the springs, ride heights, shocks and bars are tuned around that venue. Our set up would allow a second gear start on a normal autox and still have 80+ mph capability so the rear gear change did not hurt us.
We never made one run last weekend without changing something on the set up to gather data for next time. We always tune the chassis for the conditions and have gained as much as 2 seconds doing that.
We were talking to Robby Unser Saturday and he said it was the most difficult driving he had done because you cannot make a mistake and win.

Awesome! Please post more.
Now I also understand your steering ratio and the need for power steering!

Small and Tight course, you could probably go around it faster in a Go Kart with a 10 hp Honda engine.

Beautiful sound and from that perspective also looks like it behaves extraordinarily well for a Cobra. Bravo!

I know the driver knows what he's doing but all those concrete barriers give me the willies!
