Cool Bad weekend @ Phoenix I'ntl Raceway

Nascar opening weekend @ PIR with lousy weather and lousy race results... Let me put it like this, it was so cold that "snow-birds" (people that live in the snow country that migrate to Phoenix every winter) were going home to get warm.... It was warmer in Sopranoland than in Phoenix... Enuf of the weather, how bad was the races... Can you say bbbbaaaadddd???

Due to the limited number of Winston West races this year, I decided to do double duty and also spot for a team in the South West Series...(another Ford Taurus, of course)... The driver overdrove the car in the qualifying run and ended up starting 17th.... Big wreck on 1st lap with 11 cars & we were in it.... Lost 8 laps getting car fixed and ended up 25th... Ken Schrader won it...

The West race wasn't much better, car was junk and only qualified 19th... Changed everything but the sponser before the race and car ran pretty decent, up to 5th place... Looked like a decent top 5 run, but last set of tires didn't run well and it looked like a 9th place finish until distributor broke with 4 to go which dropped us to 18, 4 laps down...

As the "King" would say, "Just one of dem racin' deals"

Cool Kicked major booty!!!!

AC not only won the race, but lapped field up through 7th position... His spotter, owner Bill Mc Anally, was standing next to me on the spotters stand and about 1/2 way through the race I mentioned how boring it was getting with Austin having a half straight lead on the rest of the field... The best race was Eric Norris #32 & Greg Pursley #77 (both Fords) for 2nd place about 3/4 the way through...

Its gonna be a long season with AC running in the 16 car!!!

Sorry for the delay in the report... Didn't notice it before!!!

Default AC

Joe

Thanks for the report. I had contact with a member of his ex crew and he told me the same.

I was at Irwindale with Austin for the last race of 2001 and he was really excited about the new ride. Hope to see him in WC in a year or two.

How about Jimmie Johnson (another El Cajon driver) on the pole for Sunday? Two "rookies" up front will be wild. Both are from west coast which says alot for our end of the country.

Hope to meet you one of these days.

Dave

Yes AC does drive a Chevy.

Watch for him in the Winston West NAPA car # 16 if you get a chance.

He is an up and coming NASCAR driver from the left coast.

Dave:

I do appreciate the time and money that goes into any form of motorsports, but you are right, I will never understand Nascar. I'm not trying to be smart, but I think a poll is in order.

Cool Winston West to have 6 races on TV...

Guys,

Just for info... The Speedvision Channel has been renamed the Speed Channel and will feature Nascar racing everynite... The Phoenix Winston West race will be televised on Mar 4 @ 8 PM EST... Check the time but I believe that to be correct with a rerun later ...

Cranky,

Hell, aren't they all brand "x"??? Only 3 Fords running full time in the series...

Dave,

I hope your #88 is after DJ!!!! Also I'll be in El Cajon working the #6 (can you say "Ford Taurus"???) for the South West Tour race March 23... You coming out???

Hey Joe, The 88 is because it reads the same if you are upside down or backwards!! LOL

I have to work on the 23rd but might run down to Cajon late afternoon.

If I do I 'll come in the pits and look you up.

I won two Legends Cars races at Cajon and really like the track.

Who is the driver of the 6 car?

Hope to see you then.

Cool SWT #6

Dave,

The driver is Todd Souza... This is his 3rd or 4th year... I believe he was rookie of the year a few years back... He was a protege of Matt Crafton, the 2000 SWT champion... Matt is in the 88 Craftsman truck now... Look forward to meeting you a Cajon...

The other Southwest Tour driver I have met a couple of times is Augie Vidovich.

He did pretty well last season.

Whos your favorite for Tomorrow at the 500?

Cool The "real 88"

Dave,

Well I'm a day late on this one but DJ & Ricky are probably my favorites... I have a lot of respect for Robert Yates & his teams...

BTW, Auggie is a real good shoe... Too bad he drives a brand "x" car... He has a good chance to win the championship this year...

Joe,
Not exactly a perfect day for brand F but at least the General wasn't in Victory Lane. Better a Dodge and Ward Burton than those one of those crybabies driving for the General. ie TS JG

McCranky

BTW out here in the Hooters Cup late model devision the Fords are about equal numbers with the Chevy and win the Championship almost every year. The Fords run the sportsman heads on the 358 and are making more power than the Chevy's with factory heads.
