Default Need race brake pads for early cobra

Folks, PLEASE…respond to this topic ONLY if you have Advanced track time or Vintage Racing experience with a WORM AND SECTOR Cobra. I’m trying to find pads that behave similar to the old Ferodo DS11 pads. They have Coefficient of Friction of 0.42-0.45, and provide great braking confidence on tracks with high speed and tight corners.

The pads for the W&S “Type B” Girling calipers OEM have tangs at the top of the backing plate, NOT holes for pins. The pads are held in place by a plate with spring steel “keepers”; the plate covers the pads, and is held in place with two bolts. This is all STANDARD CSX 2000-2125 Front caliper construction, NOT RACE MODIFIED! TR3A’s use the same Girling caliper and pad design. YES, I have searched the Triumph websites.

All I can find are STREET pads. Who provides race pads for this early caliper design, and what compound would you recommend that provides good fade resistance, but doesn’t eat up the discs??

THANK YOU in advance for any help!! I’ve worn out my Web search!! I don’t see a yellow or red pad made by EBC for the 1961 TR3A.
Best!! Pistachio Bob]

Try contacting Bill or Dave Murray at the shelby American collection.

Send some old pads to Porterfield and they will make you new ones.

From the first link provided by jknich

If you are using any of these calipers in vintage racing or any racing or street applications
we can supply the pads.Ferodo DS-11 or 2459 compounds are still available in various part numbers.

Folks! Many thanks for the kindness shown in responding! It looks like Porterfield is the source for pads. The R4-1 Vintage racing pad is the one I chose. I’m running them at Laguna Seca with a little 340HP 289 Cobra with 25.5 x 8 x 15” Hoosiers, and will report how they behave. Those NOS Ferodo DS11’s are killer pads! I’ll be surprised if the R4-1’s equal the braking power of the Ferodo’s! I charged up the hill to Turn 7 just before the Corksrew and pulled my car into balance for 8A and B with confidence. The same was true with keeping the throttle floored under the bridge and half way up the hill to Turn one before braking hard and shifting into second for single apexing Turn 2. I would greatly appreciate a link to the Ferodo DS11 pad source! I found the Ferodo website, but they were offering a DS1.11 pad and did not offer the early Cobra/TR3A pad. Thanks to all!! Bob

Just for info, this conversation reminds me that most all brake shoe and pad friction compounds in the 1960’s and earlier used asbestos as the base material. Asbestos is a very good structural and heat resistant fiber.
In my long manufacturing career I spent some years running Bendix, making brakes for everything from motorcycles thru cars, planes and trains. Bendix had acquired several European brake companies (but not Ferdodo) including Jurid who was OE for Mercedes, Porsche and BMW. Anyway, the conversion away from asbestos was very difficult since other materials either wore too fast, overheated and broke up, smoked, squeeled, or were difficult to mold into useable shoes and pads. Current friction compounds are quire good though. Memories….. Dave

Robert, Good luck on the race! When is it? Post #4 above mentions my first link. Porterfield may have your Ferodo DS11's too. I've used Porterfield pads in the past and have been pleased with their performance.
