Exclamation No passing in F1?-lookee here!!

Although there ain't much of it, when it happens, it sure is spectacular.
Here's Ralf Schumachers pass of Ruebens Barrichello going into the first corner at the Australian GP this weekend

Cool

Frankly, this was the best GP I've seen in a long time.
Oh sure, the accident at the start was spectacularly stupid (I think most F-1 starts are an accident waiting to happen - unecessarily dangerous) but, there was some actual racing for the first 20 or 30 minutes.
I don't care much for "blocking" but if that's what it take to make F1 exciting, so be it.

Regerettably, the final 2/3 of the race was the usual sleep-inducing procession.

PS: Are F1 cars fully automatic now?

Jim:

I agree - it's not about the quantity of the passes, but the quality. Both M. Schumacher and Montoya showed they have major cajones: tire-smoking passes under braking, right on the razor edge of control.

I think most of the upshifts and some downshift sequences (i.e. 6th - 2nd, 4th-2nd) are pre-programmed. You hit a button and it happens.

Tell the truth now, Cranky: how long was the nap you took during the Vegas race yesterday? That one was a snoozer too!

Jim,
You are right I did take a little snooze yesterday but I will admit that the launch in F1 was kind of exiciting.

Trans-AM Jim

Great action shot, care to let us know how you did it ? Agree, the most exciting time for a F1 race is the start and the first few laps. I do not understand why the race wasn't red flagged with I believe 8 cars out of the race. They must have allowed an additional 1/2", same steps that NASCAR takes, for the spoiler and front wings to get the lift correct, it worked

I am pretty sure that all of the shifts on most cars are handled by the computer. They still use the sequential gearboxes, just computer actuated. There are a couple of drivers whose teams haven't got the details worked out just yet as they showed some this past weekend downshifting with the paddle. The big news this year is two way telemetry. Engineers can now change parameters on the car during the race. Teams have already invested huge amounts to make sure that others teams don't hack in and send false information to another car. Pretty crazy stuff!

Question for you F1 guys!!! If they would have red flagged the race , would the drivers that are out of it be able to bring out a back up car? I had heard they could but not sure. Kevin

Kevin, they can if the race has less than 2 laps completed, but some team had both of their cars taken out and only one spare available, so not all of the drivers would have made it back. I still fell asleep midway.........

According to SpeedChannel, Charlie Whiting (F1 race director) made a statement in the Melbourne driver's meeting that they were not going to be red flagging any races this year unless there was complete blockage of the track when the cars made it back around the course.

They released the safety car after the incident, and it made it through the mess OK, so no red flag.

Thumbs up Did you see the in-car video of this same launch?

Ralf Schumacher just held on to the wheel and kept it straight and level until he hit the ground again! Looked like he was taking off in a Cessna 150....V1....V2, rotate....pull back slightly on the yoke, keep the wings nice and level....that's it.
