Oh Boys!,

For all you blown engine fellows:

I just picked up a 1974 351W (D4AE) that was donated by Ford to a school auto shop in 74. The engine has been barely run and is in great condition. Has all original paint and stickers, a little rust and dirt.

Anyone interested? I'm taking it apart now and checking it out.

Of the motors that failed. Where they running stock cranks and rods or aftermarket? If aftermarket which brands, etc (SCAT, Eagle, Crower...).

Thanks

Gary,

I know two of the motors were Ford SVO crate motors; a 302 and a 351. My motor in McStang (370 c.i.) was built in a performance shop, but what I know of the lower end is as follows:

- 12:1 forged pistons
- Cast Steel crank with Cleveland sized main bearings
- Stud girdle for main bearings
- 6.215 Eagle connecting rods

I won't know more till I tear it down which will be after I get the 289FIA running.

Gary,
The motor that broke in my car was a stock 351 crate engine with over 3000 hard track miles. I have no complaints. When you play hard sometimes you get hurt. I would have rather not destroyed the block and crank but no sense crying about it.
The next motor will have a stronger bottom end, Forged crank, rods, girdle. etc...etc...

Club Cranky, I salute you, despite your ignominious end this season. How better to go out? (sh'yea)

You are my heros. THAT's what these cars are for! (ok, and a little cruising, whatever.)

I saw the light at VIR this Spring and now need to figure out how to get more track time!!! I trust ClubCobra will be the place to plot and learn over the wintry season. Maybe I can find SOMEPLACE closer here to Cincinnati than N'yawk.

Default Get to the Glen

Doug,
It is 554 miles from Cin. OH to the Glen. This is only 50 more miles than our trips to VIR from NJ.
But The Glen is one of the best tracks anyplace and it is without a doubt the fastest.
So beg, borrow, or steal a trailer if you don't already have one and we will get you all set up for the Glen Next May.

So far the Club Cranky gang has made two trips to VIR and we have yet to get a return visit from our southern friends.
You could be the first.

RD aka Cranky

Default Awwwwrightie Then....

OK, Crankoids, how do I start my education?

I'm entirely ignorant about what clubs do what, what the rules are (like my SPF's solo mio rollbar), and how the Glen fits in. I'll read anything and will likely get some more on track education over the winter down South (still want to do Bondurant again--in MY car). Alternatively, may try to meet up with Mac somewhere, like CLOSER TO CINCINNATI--anyone got ideas?

Sooo, in the expectation that I'm not alone here, let the education begin. And if you want to start a newbie trackie thread on the racing forum, just point me at it (and tell me where to apex....)

My smurfie blue fireproof duds hardly got sweated up last time--MORE!

Thanks ( I think)

Doug,
One of the groups we run with at the Glen, PDA is a very loose run organization. So far they are not banning the single hoop Cobras. Good for you, bad for instructors. Lots of different cars and trucks run at the Glen and the advanced groups run pretty fast. They have three run groups, I suggest you ask for novice group for your first trip to the Glen.
Go to their site for more info... www.imp-auto.com

Cranky, sorry to here of all the broken motors. I have been lucky so far. I think that the external oil pump I am running could be helping, you may want to consider that for your next motor. Well, its 500 miles next weekend to willow springs, should be fun. So who was faster, Mcfez or the unique FIA? scott

Scott,
For some reason Don and Joe were never on the track in the same location but in my expert opinion of the matchup it looks like it was a draw.
The fastest car out there Friday was a 520 ci Donovan powered Chevelle purpose built road racer???? Looked just like the car you see the street punks driving, real low, wing on the back. The kind of car all the racers like to laugh about until it kicks your butt.

Cranky,

What turn were those pictures taken at, with the turns & big elevation change? That doesn't look like part of the NASCAR circuit. Do they open up the whole track for you guys or am I just not noticing the elevation changes on TV?

We use the entire long course which is 2/3 Nascar course and 1/3 additional course that is too long for the Nascar racers???
Sometimes I can never figure out where the photos were taken from and this is one of those times. The uphill is in the esses but I still am not sure where the other photos were taken.

I have got to get out there next year! Even if as a spectator. Those guard rails would make me nervous though.

Cool

GUARD RAILS??? WHAT GUARD RAILS??? THEY HAVE THEM AT THE GLEN?????

I think the other turn is either the off camber 270 degree left (turn #9?) or the next left hander before pit in (turn #10).

Thats the beautiful thing about the Glen...major elevation changes, especially in the Boot, which is what makes that part of the track so much fun.

Dem NASCAR boys don't know what there missing, they don't run the boot, which is like making love to a foam version of Salma Hayek instead of the real thing!

The boot does look like the best part of the place. It's the wrong time of the year for me to be gettin' exited about this stuff. Maybe it was the Salma Hayek analogy.

Blow-up sheep, foam versions of Hayek--JohnnyMac, you gots to get out more boy!

Love that 3D of the track--wished more tracks had that instead of what look like Geographic Survey maps.
