Exclamation Open Track event with DVSFIII

This is a copy of the poll posted in Cobra Talk. Vote over there.

Where to have DVSF open track?
There are 3 tracks available to stage an open track event in conjunction with the trip to DVSFIII. Each has it's +/-'s. I welcome all posts with your opinions, whether you would come to such an event or not. I ask, PLEASE DO NOT VOTE UNLESS YOU HAVE SERIOUS INTENTIONS OF SIGNING UP!!! I hope to use the poll data to determine which venue to pursue.

MID OHIO: Nearest to Columbus, approx 1 hour north. Biggest track, very fast, world class facility. Home of the SCCA Runoffs, CART events, etc. As of now, available on Monday, June 23. Est cost to rent for the day, $6000-7000, thus VERY Pricey. Would be better if another club/organization took the date and we filled in some of their spots. See www.midohio.com for track details.

NELSON LEDGES: 2 1/2 - 3 hours northeast, between Akron and Youngstown. Decent layout, older facility with some recent improvements to the track. Holds SCCA events and bike races. Available on Friday, June 20 for "Fun Days" event organized by the track management. Limited instruction available for novices. Priced right at $100/driver. See www.fastone.com for track/fundays info.

BEAVER RUN: 4+ hours northeast from Columbus, about 1 hour east of Nelson Ledges off I-76. Brand new facility, lots of runoff, interesting layout, used by several magazines recently for track testing. Available for Thursday June 19 if we rent it, otherwise taken by another private event we can't join. Cost about $5000 for the day. See www.beaverun.com for track info.

Any other tracks you know of?

Don

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT part of the DVSF event!!! I am trying to put together open track time to coincide WITH DVSF for those of us who would rather run than show. Call it a bit more incentive to be there. It also allows us tracksters an excuse for the long tow.

Don,

This has been brought to my attention and I see the point where this might get confused with the DVSF. Would you mine posting that this is your event and has nothing to do or associated with the Fling?

Thanks
DV

Default Try IRP

Indianapolis Raceway Park. Drag, oval and road course. http://www.irponline.com/

It is the other side of Indianapolis due east of Columbus. Three hours (at the speed limit )

At mid-ohio the weekend of the fling is the vintage grand prix. Mid ohio may be interested in adding some Cobra time to the event as an added draw. If that was the case then it could be done real cheap. Of course you could always see if SAAC is interested.

The featured car of this vintage GP is the Vette. Boy does that lead to some interesting possibilities! Maybe next year, feature the Cobra?????

DV, I will be at the auto cross, but it something could be done with the vintage GP, that would be tough to resist!

All you all real racers are going to join us waxers aren't you??

Already called IRP and Putnam Park too. As of 2 weeks ago, they hadn't set any scheduling for clubs. I had hoped to find another club/organization who had booked the date, then piggyback our small group into their event. Renting a track on our own would be nice, got $5000-$7000 laying around you want to play with?

Okay guys.....I hate to even ask this question, but............I know MY insurance policy does not cover any track events and I'm sure many more of you are in the same boat. So what happens in the event of a mishap (nice way to put it)??????

Are the guys that aren't covered just rolling the dice??? And what happens if you do have coverage and one of the guys without coverage causes the "mishap"????

And better yet, do the guys with coverage even want the guys without it on the same course??? Or do each driver/car have to show proof of insurance before they are even let on the track??

Brian "just curious" Newell

p.s. I'd vote for Mid-Ohio since it is so close to home (about 7 miles )

Generally if it is a Driving School most insurance co's. will cover you in case of a mishap. If it is strictly Open Track without schooling you probably ain't covered. If you have never done Open Track I strongly suggest a performance driving school just to learn how to drive on a racetrack with other fast drivers. There are rules of the track that you have to learn first before driving fast. Have seen way too many "driving experts" go out on the track and try to show how fast they are only to incounter a stationary object. Doing Open Track at a SAAC convention does not qualify as Open Track experience unless you have been running with the A group for a couple of times. While Open Track is not real racing (no passing in corners) it is very fast running and you can get into a lot of trouble real fast.

Are you ready to sign up?

Another reason to try to get another club to set things up...most clubs are "driving school" events with instructors and event insurance. If we do it ourselves, we need to get some local instructors to help out. Even driving schools are encountering stiff resistance from individuals insurance companies for mishaps.

Generally, the rule is...Be Responsible for Yourself. don't put yourself in situations where you aren't comfortable (slow down, pull in, change run groups, BE AWARE)

Of course, the best way for small block cars to avoid mishaps is to get out of the way of the BIG BLOCK cars. lol
