Oil tank pre-heater
Oil tank heaters, I see are available in two styles either a stick on external blanket style, or internal immersion style much like an electric hot water jug element, probably one down side with the internal is if the element went and contaminated the oil, any experience on how they work etc?

I have a Moroso pan heater. Takes about an hour to get a temp. indication on the gage.

i've seen both type, actually had to use neither. right now i put an internal type in my oil tank because it had the fitting and i had the element from another tank , the element looks to be made of brass about 1/4" dia.with the threaded plug portion brass also, pretty stout, i think if you burn through the element something is wrong big time. only problem i can see is if you plug the element in without it being immersed in oil. probably pulls some pretty good juice also.
correction: the element is made of copper, the plug is brass.

I think from what you say either is good, at this stage I am in the build process and its easy to weld a fitting into my unused tank, and go with the internal.
Regarding juice pull generally they are 300watt, but I have seen 500watt and someone in a corvette had a 1500watt heater, dont know much about current draw but the 300watt should be okay otherwise I guess they wouldnt make them!!!

It's an external heater that adheres to the bottom of the pan. It's been on for a thousand miles and still works/looks good.

regarding the wattage, i guess it would depend on how fast you want to heat the oil or to what temp., wonder what determines the wattage?
i see a visit to new zealand in the future! |

That makes sense speed of heating and watts!
NZ is a good place to visit, I have just had my car at Motorsport Solutions at Ruapuna Raceway just out of Christchurch, this outfit does a lot of single seat restoration F1, F5000, F3000 etc and has a few American enthusiasts as customers, friends, some of the these guys fly out and stay a while race their cars. Most popular events are in late January February. I was just speaking to a guy who races at Bonneville each year, he is absolutey intriged with my Cobra, the chassis and large HP etc, sort of like the ultimate toy - I hope!!!!!
