 Nice guy. I met him in Monterey once, very pleasant and engaging and extremely articulate. He was from an era of gentlemen racers that is gone now - sacrificed to the God of Commercialism. I don't think he ever raced a car with a sponsor logo , although perhaps toward the end of his career. Imagine a guy being World Champion in F1 for the first time at 34! The cars were a lot more gentle back then - and deadly.
He looked a lot taller in the magazines...

Like many auto enthusiasts, I have read about Phil Hill's racing career, quite a driver to say the least. Another part of his legacy was his long career as a contributor to Road & Track magazine. A long line of interesting articles with insights into cars and events from years gone by. Phil Hill was one America's finest race drivers and he will be remembered for years to come.

I never realize how talented guys like Phil were until I started racing formula cars. I always thought it was all about big balls and nothing more. The fact is, it's about talent and courage and having a great understanding of the physics of a race car. It's the hardest thing I've ever done. He made it look easy. He will be missed.

A couple years ago I sat at a table that was next to Mr.Hill's table along with Sterling Moss and several other of the best drivers of that era. It was amazing to watch him at his age be excited about being at the Historic dinner
sponsored by Tatersolls of Australia.
Yes, I stood in line to shake those talented hands. I could only think of how many times he had done this and still he smiled with genuine appreciation for all of us that approached him.
Gods speed Mr. Hill.
