FrostKing
I have used the Frost King HVAC insulation.
Silver reflective foil on one side, a layer of foam insulation ~1/8" and advesive backing. I used 1/2" aluminum strips at the edges of the foot box's to keep it from peeling off...everywhere it can't be seen, I used the HVAC type aluminum foil tape, very tough but unless you are VERY careful, ends up looking sloppy.
As I understand it, the other products may have better sound deadening qualities...thought there is a layer of lead or some sort of very dense material in the mix...I dunno.
In my Cobra, I covered the foot boxes, transmission tunnel, firewall panels and the rear bulkheads with the stuff. Even though the car has side pipes, I have been told it does cut down on noise in the sense of valve train rattle, road noise and various sources of mechanical serenade.
Also, keeps the trans tunnel cool on a hot day.
Use something, it does help. If only for radiant heat. The lead lined stuff probably muffles mechanical clatter better. Have heard it is VERY pricey, maybe not cost effective in a typical open car like a Cobra with side pipes.
