New Hood Support
4 Attachment(s)
Installed a couple gas charged hood supports. Just got tired of that prop rod. Now for the trunk. If anyone is interested, I made the brackets myself with help from pics on another forum. The shocks are from McMaster Car, about $15 each. Part #4138T58, I used the 15# of force.

Your installation looks great. Thanks for posting it.
I tried doing this on mine. Got them from McMaster Carr too, my favorite Cobra parts supplier. I don't remember what part number I got, but I had the following issue: When the gas spring is fully compressed it still exerts force. Have you found the the model you purchased exert '0' force when fully compressed? I felt that continuous force exerted to the brackets and fiberglass could be a problem. Thanks, Arthur |
I got fed up with the prop rod too and with the gas charged cylinders about a year ago. One of the best mods I've done...

Hood support
Sorry for the delay. When fully compressed it does still have a little force but I don't think its enough to cause a problem. The brackets I made are long and have 4 screws each on the hood, I thought this should spread the force out and prevent cracking, so far so good.
Thanks Joey |
Do you have the web site address for McMaster? thanks

When I have some timeI will track down these Zero pressure gas springs. But if anyone comes across these please post your findings. I've read a couple of posts about gelcoat cracks appearing in the area where the hinge mounting points are glassed to the body. So adding a 15 or 30 PSI constant load to these points concerns me. Thanks, Arthur |
