rear end housing question

on the rear end housing that comes with the kit do you have to drill and tap holes on the back of the housing for plugs, one to fill it and the other on the bottom to drain it. my center section does not have any plugs built in it.

A wild guess says there is a plug with a 3/8 square recess somewhere from the pinion to the rear of the housing. It will be on a plane just below the pinion. Some of them you drain simply by pulling the rear cover and making a mess.

Center section has a fill plug built it. Drain is your option. Tapping with a 3/8 bolt might not be a bad idea. A vent for the top is in the kit.

if its a 9", then yes the fill plug is in the 3rd member,... to drain, i wouldn't put a plug in it, the gear lube is thick, it'll take days to drain out anyway, i always use a plunger type oil sucker to suck out the fluid from the fill hole, unless i'm changing gears then i just put a pan under and remove bolts

I have run Ford 9" rear ends in lots of offroad trucks and I have one in my Cobra. I drill and tap a hole in the bottom of the housing for a 3/8" threaded allen plug, and seal it with Permatex brown pipe flange sealant. The plug will NOT come out unless removed on purpose and it makes draining a snap, when oil is hot.
