Striped screw in windshield
Threads are striped in one of the holes in the side of the windshield it's a
# 10 screw ....I have a Lexan windshield, any ideas how to fix it.... Jon |
fill it with epoxy and redrill.

JB Weld!
The threads are in a brass strip behind the chrome trim. You can remove the bras strip, shoten it by 1/2", and redrill all the holes. Bras is fairly soft. You could use a center punch around the perimeter of the hole to make the hole smaller. Then retap the threads. Somewhere along the line I remember some body was selling a SS replacement for the brass strip. Much stronger material. |
#10 screw might be a little tough going into jb weld.....

I dunno, JB weld? sounds a bit half-arsed to me.....why not just put a thread insert in there and fix it right.

Because the brass strip is only 1/8" thick or less. I'v tried steel thread inserts in material that thin with poor results. OTOH, I'v used JB Weld with excellent results.

if it's that thin, your right an insert would be useless.
the frame on my car is much thicker on the sideposts than 1/8 inch. and i have the standard cobra frame. at 1/8 inch that would give you 4 threads of engagement on a 10-32 thread maybe an oversize self tapper might give the extra grab needed |
The threads are not into the frame. They're into a brass strip behind the frame. You could over drill it, and then put a bigger screw in. But then you'd have to do that for all of them. And if you wanted a flush fit, you'd have to drill and countersink all the holes in the uprights.

If the side frame is brass like mine, JB weld and redo.
Take your time. I used SS screws and studs for the window frame with wings. Hope this helps. :D |
