So , I have an A&c car I bought from the persons who built it back in 2014. I felt it was a pretty decent looking car but the more I looked at the surface , the more I saw . So I got brave and ran a 12” sanding block across the surface , yikes ! It’s pretty damn lumpy . So I’ve been attacking the car , first 400 grit on a sanding block , then 600 on a d/a , then 800 , then 1000, then 3m super cut on a wool pad , then 3m rubbing compound on a form foam pad then perfect it glaze on a soft foam pad . It’s a lot of work but the results are , to me , how the car should look . I see a lot of comments on how great the A&c body is , in my case it’s far from what it could be , as delivered by A&c . Be warned tho , I wouldn’t recommend anyone dive in and do this , I owned a car dealership for 20 years and have above average experience with paint and body work .I should add , my car is a gel coat car , this would never work on a painted car , I can say , for what I see on my car , the gel coat is very thick , there’s a lot of thickness to work with .

That's a great looking finish! It's tough to make black fiberglass look straight.

Looks really nice for polished gel coat. Yeah, handlaid or even old Corvette matching die/stamped panels are never going to match the latest composites or metal panels. You are a brave man - I had to go through the gel coat in several areas of my ERA to straighten out the panels and level panel match ups.

Thnx , it’s my winter project , one panel at a time , and unfortunately there’s still a lot of winter left .

Thnx , seems like on my particular car , the two lumpiest areas were the hood and the area between the trunk lid and the interior compartment. Tomorrow’s area will be the trunk lid , it’s not too lumpy but all around the edge , about 1 inch all around there’s a low spot . I asked a guy in the area who specializes in corvettes, it’s caused by the heat from the epoxies when they bond inner and outer panels together .

I suppose an A&c car in a lighter color gelcoat wouldn’t be so noticeable, but obviously a black one really shows it . All straightened out , it looks like a fine black paint job , nice and deep black. I like the idea of a gel coat car because it’s so durable and resistant to rock chips
