Default Another Sidepipe Thread......

Well, after 22k miles the car is running great. However, those damn sidepipes. There are some kind of baffles inside them and for the last 12k miles they are rattling, or more like vibrating. Not alot but when you get to a certain rpms you get the harmonics of the baffle rattling in the pipes.

Anyone else experience this? What have you done to correct it, if anything?

Roscoe

Roscoe: I
have the same issue, it is on the passengers side. I hear a rattle when I let off the gas or just cruising at a low speed.
I have heard that people take 1" to 2" long sheet metal screws and thread a couple in from the bottom of the side pipe to engage in the interior baffle pipes.
Not sure if this is correct or not. Haven't done it, so I don't know.
Maybe we should contact someone at Shell Valley because isn't that where they came from. Shell Valley was stenciled on the box that they came in.

Default HEY ROSCOE!!!!!!!

All these pipes are made differently, but typically what happens is most of the baffles are lightly welded in place and eventually the weld breaks and the baffle is now spinning around inside the pipe.

You either have to:

1) cut the pipe open and fix the weld

2) get a new side pipe

3) use bigger ear plugs

Sidepipes from another manufacturer are tough, pipes from the same manufacturer are just as tough too depending if that have made chassis changes to the car regarding engine placement.

Several companies sell the 'auger' tubes. Just cut at the collector and turnout and weld in the new center section. As a bonus they tend to be quieter and don't 'blow out' like 'glasspacs.
