SPF standard sidepipe noise level
Can anyone tell me what the DB level is with the SPF MK111 standard sidepipes that are supplied by the factory? I am concerned about the noise being too loud since I live in a retirement community and really don't want to scare the old folks too much, well not too much anyway.
Also, is there a difference in the tonal effect coming from SS pipes vs the mild steel?
Any help would be much apprecaited.

I wouldnt worry about the noise, most are hard of hearing , a lot of Snowbirds so not many people in West are there, and if YOU dont have your hearing aid in the ear you cant tell either. Also potatoes work, put one in each of the road pipes and listen if its better or worse.

Short shift with low RPM and you'll be fine...
Grab some gears with high RPM's is a different story..

The stock SPF pipes are fairly quiet.
Don't worry about the neighbors.
Most upgrade to larger inside diameter pipes as the originals are extremely restrictive.

When I had my car through the Bay Area Resources (BAR) in Calif. to get the car smog exempted 7 years ago the technician put a DB meter to my pipes at 2500 rpm at 4 feet away and measured 105 or 110 db. My neighbors in the Bay Area didn't take kindly to me firing up the Mighty 418 at 6 am every Saturday morning so I would coast out of my driveway and pop the clutch down the hill a few hundred yards away. My past experience with stainless steel pipes has been that they seem louder than others.

Stock pipes are not real loud although over time the fiberglass packing deteriorates somewhat making them a bit louder. The SS aftermarket pipes are better designed, larger, costly, and you have your choice of sound level. Best choice is http://fireflyperformance.com/index.htm . I have the original ceramic coated pipes and have not had a problem in over 10 years of use. Still look like new.

By the way, there is a direct coorelation to noise and horsepower. Mild motors seem to be "quiet" compared to those of us in the 500+ hp range.

A lot of our friends live in Corte Bella, we live in Sun City Festival. Ear muffs work well, or ear phones , so you dont hear the noise. I always let the neighbors know when I leave and when I come back, kind of a let them know I didnt move.

Stainless Specialties. Do a search under "muffler" and you will see a few threads on these. 'Jake' even posted a short YouTube video and his sounds just like mine (when they were fresh). Like all pipes, they deteriorate with age and get louder. They are a well built muffler but they need a transition cone to make them better. See this thread to explain.

I recently bought a complete spare set of pipes and will be working on a second set in the near future. Not sure yet if I'm going to go with the same mufflers or try something else. Either way, I need to incorporate a transition cone to keep the deacceleration flutter to a minimum.

Tin-Man,
I had my standrd SPF now for 7 years, (changed to firefly) as said already you will be heard before you are even seen. I live in a very quiet area and to respect the others i keep the RPM low and short gears until im further out.
Coming home at 3am is a no no...
But just do it, but keep the RPM's down.
