As soon as a bidder assistant is at your side (such as in this case), they know just who you are and what your maximum allowable bid is. When they do "the pause" to go over the description of the car again, they are also double checking those that have bid on the car already to make sure they do not go over what their financial institution has guaranteed.
When I said that the BJ organization was has everything well defined once you put that bidders pass on, they really do.

Well, here is someone who knows it first hand. Barrett Jackson auction West Palm Beach several years ago. I'm there days early, have my heart set on a privateer BOSS 302 TA car (same car I have been bidding on Ebay on and off for the past 4+ months) ....Over the course of the two days before the car hits the block I am at the car looking it over, taking notes (owner hopes the car won't sell for less than 85K as that is what he has in it), taking pictures, making the phone calls to verify casting numbers and such. Comes down to Saturday night, early prime time and the car is now up on the stage, I rarely bid until the first "stall"(where they reread the description of the car), car is at 35K at this point and I start bidding, so far the other people bidding against me are legit (people I have seen or have spoken with at other BJ auctions).....Bidding now dies at 55K, I am the high bidder, going once, going twice, bidding now at 57K, 1K increments, I am now at 65K(give or take a 1K as it has been at least 5 years since that auction),I then spot who I am bidding against, the sellers brother-in-law who I met the very first day they were setting up the car in it's display area in the asile outside the main food vendors area (high traffic).....So on his next bid, I rub my hands together (sign that I am out) and no matter what they do to entice me, I refuse to bid higher....They gavel the car sold.....Remember, this is on a Saturday night, the car and owner are from Michigan....The following Tuesday the car is once again back up on Ebay (keep in kind BJ holds titles for a few weeks afterwards), same seller. his story to me (keep in mind he did not know I was the secondary high bidder at the auction) is that the high bidder could not pay for it and BJ refunded him all of his fees.......Sorry, but I knew that was not true, for if the higher bidder could not follow through they would have come to me as the secondary and offered the car to me, or put it back across the block, which BJ did neither........Guy went on to sell the car for 60K to a collector I know in Wisconsin who still has the car today........So, does it happen, yes, do sellers get burned by buying back their own cars, yes........Not hearsay in my case as I knew the players,,,,,,,,,

If you had alerted your bidders assistant that the competitor was a relative it would have ended there. They claim to have protections for this kind of thing, ie, "known associates", but on a one-time seller it's hard.

Since the car was already inflated price wise I decided to stick the owner with the bill. Remember, he not only had to pay the listing fee, but the buyer and seller fees on the sale. I did send a letter to BJ afterwards and got a nice response that stated "we will look in to it". Never did hear anything else about it. They know it goes on.....

Bill,
You mean to tell me they apparently didn't DO anthing about it? Oh, say it ain't do!
I know a major player at one of the larger, well known "upscale" auction companies and all he will do when I ask about this type of crap is smile and say "no comment!"
And I am sure that the televised event bring some really dodgey bidders out who are looking for their "15 minutes" of fame....they can't be on REAL HOUSEWIVES so BJ/RM/RUSSO & STEEL is the chance to be a TV star.

So I shouldn't tell you about the mini documentary/filler/fluff piece (as yet to be aired) they are working on for the 38 ProStreet Willys I donated to Make-A-Wish at this years WPB auction. Believe me, not my idea, but the film crew for SpeedTV (with prompting from the folks at BJ) followed me around for three days (on property only thank goodness) before and just after the car went over the stage. I can't see how anyone could do that day in and day out for weeks at a time. 15,16,17 interviews, same basic questions asked. Why am I doing it, what is the story behind why I am doing it, what is the story on the car, motor, transmission, paint, manufacturer of the lug-nuts used (really), etc. Turn this way, turn that way, can we move the car forward a foot, back 6 inches, the sun is not right, OI VEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boy was I happy when it was all over, gave a parting 30 seconds and then Deb (who was smart enough to stay in the background) and I left the property and did not go back, did not even watch the rest on TV when I got back to the house I was staying at just down the road.......

I tivo every BJ and last year they were on Mr. Jackson when a car stalled , the bidding as it were , he did a weird gesture on his head , strange enough to notice you know , not something you would do , Bidding pick up . Just saying . Was going to mention it last January but decided it might ruffle some feathers . Lets say this , everytime bidding stalls, they chat and the bidding starts up again . Great thats there job , But every time it works ? Not once have I seen it not work , there not that good , no one is . That being said you never see that on the well bought cars , which is kinda wierd . the 302 Boss that went for 40K a year or 2 ago at the end of day 1 , 2 ? Not a peep , maybe they speak up only if your a good customer/consigner ? Thats my $1.50
Cheers

I cannot speak specifically about BJ since I have never consigned a car there but at Russo steele (and I would assume BJ) if your car doesn't sell like mine didnt and if you sell the car yourself within 90 days from the auction you still owe them their commission even if you sell it yourself. When I was informed about that I called them and they pointed me to the fine print in the contract I signed. It took 45 days to get my title back (since you have to sign it over to them) and waited my 91 days to sell my car.

I shake my head when they sell a nice street rod for 30 to 40k. You can not buy the parts and motor for that excluding labor and paint! Add on all the fees and the seller takes a bath.
