Went to the Drag Strip Sunday
Speedworld, 11/07/10, altitude~1200ft, DA?:
10.69 @ 129.80mph, 1.7003 60ft...
On good street tires (Toyo R888, 275-40 17), with an independent rear-end, and an automatic. 2800lb.
Never did try to tune, just ran it as it drives on the street. Maybe next time I'll drop the tire pressure and go 10.5?
Who says IRS can't run fast? Who says these cars are terrible to get to hook?
Woohoo - 10 sec club member now!
Anyone know the DA on Sunday?

IRS cars can be made to hook, especially with automatics. A blown C5 'Vette just set the IRS 60 ft. record @ 1.20 seconds. He went on to run an 8.56 quarter.

I'm running 1.38 60's with my Vette IRS. That's on an ET Street Radial. All I can say is watch your half shafts...I can break a half shaft almost every run.

Eric's car was hummin' right along. You shoulda seen the smile on his face! That car would easily go into the 9's with traction and a hard launch, and E has it set up much more for track days than dragging. Monster Power!

Jack,
Yours being an EM (mine is a Midstates), you probably have the same C4 IRS that I have... And I well understand its limitations for torque. There is a reason I do not run ETs or other cheater slicks - I really don't want the result. I can live without the short times in 60ft to preserve the hardware. I also run a 3.08 rear gear and a 2500 stall converter to keep the driveline shock to a minimum. The entire IRS (except u-joints last year) has been in this car for 19 years at this point!

Way to go man. That's an awesome pass. 1.7 is pretty decent while not breaking stuff.
The general rule for cars like ours is your ET will change about .2 for every change of .1 in the 60ft. The trap speed doesnt' change really either way. In the end the trap speed tells the real story. Your car hammers.

It depends what time of day or night, but probably between 1000ft and 2500ft. Lowest would be before 10AM and after about 8PM. Around 4PM was the highest.

Thanks Greg. Runs were around 11:00 AM, so I'll guess about 1200ft for DA. And thanks for the kind words. Of course I have seen your old car run a couple times and you know how to go fast. My runs were much less violent than yours, I remember your 1-2 shift was wild. As I recall your 60ft times were significantly faster than mine. So I might pickup .3-.4 if I could get to a 1.5second 60ft? Similar to you I also had the best luck coming right off idle, instead of loading the converter. Had to just ease into it. So thats 1 Ford and 2 Chevys in the 10s for Phoenix. I can't recall any other 10s in Phoenix, going back to 2003...
Edit: Just checked your slips and saw 1.7 for 60ft, so I'm not too bad for not having ETs on the back and still get a 1.7. Maybe if my DA was 750, i'd get a couple more mph? Not that I'm not happy with the performance of this 2800 pounder, set-up for road course work...

Actaully I never had a 1.5 60 ft time in the time I owned the car. Most often I tried to start from idle. The days when it was hard to start would be when track prep is bad and slippery. That probably does look pretty violent even though it's not all that terrrible in the car.
Here's a 2800 DA pass
Here's a 750 DA pass, the video is in my signature.
I think if we gave it a go next to each other it would be side by side.

Yeah Greg, maybe a good side by side run, if I could keep consistent. Out of four runs, I had one 13.4sec run with lots of tire smoke to about 1/8th mile... I kept thinking "its gonna hook-up anytime now..." But had two runs at 129.80mph and 129.83mph, so the car is more consistent than I am. Maybe with a little better DA I'll get past the 130 mph mark. I realize now that was overheating the tires and also shoulda dropped the pressure, but still not sure how much better than 1.7 I'd get.
I'll post when I'm going back on another club day. Maybe some other Cobras will show-up and not just cruise and bench race. He!! the last group day, I couldn't bring the Cobra, so i brought my blue 12.4 sec Vette for y'all to beat-up on, just to show-up! Gotta get more folks doing what these cars are supposed to do!

Congrats on the 10 sec pass, that's moving out. Did they say anything about your safety equipment? Cheers.

TT,
Speedworld makes certain exceptions on Club Days. In the past, some have been asked to leave at 10.99, due to the 3-point roll bar not meeting NHRA rules, which I think require 5 points in convertibles faster than 13.99 (?). On this day I went through tech and the gal asked if I had run there before and what restrictions had been imposed. I replied that some had been kicked-off at 10.99 in the past and she didn't really say anything else. It can be hit and miss. I wasn't attracting a lot of attention to myself and the Cobra is well behaved on the track, so i got to stay...
