Hoover Dam By-Pass Bridge
FYI,
The Arizona Car-Nutz Car Club in Kingman is organizing a cruise over the new Hoover Dam Bridge slated for Dec. 11th.
The Cruise is coordinated with some car clubs in Nevada. There will be hot rods going in both directions over the new bridge at high noon on that date.
People wanting to spend the night can book a rooms at Railroad Pass Casino for $40.00. There is special parking and entertainment Saturday afternoon.
If anyone is interested in going that far...check out The Arizona Car-Nutz web site for details or let me know and I'll give you more information.
Should be fun this time of the year.

Nippy and windy it might be....just got to do it so I can say, " I've been 900 feet high in my Cobra".
I'm plannning to stop on sunday and take pictures from the Dam looking up at the bridge.
Hopefully, I can get a shot of the cobra and bridge together.
Bill
Rich, the gov. closed Parker Dam to only cars (no trucks or RV's)and have posted two guards on it 24/7...this really sucks.

Can you just drive across the new bridge or do you have to submit to a complete body scan and cavity search? The last time I was in Las Vegas they were saying the lake would be all but dry by 2019. Is that still the case or is it raining again?

I drove across the new bridge on Nov 4. No view driving across but there is a pedistrian walk on the north side with a great view of the dam. However, too far to go for just a cruise across the new bridge.

Rich, I have more than 10 cars (two cobra's) from the Havasu CLassics Club signed up. I also know of a few others going from Havasu. Have no idea about Kingman's participation.
The "Parade of Classics" just sounded like somethimng fun to do and a way to get out of town for a week end cruise.

As a fellow acrophobe I feel it is my duty to tell you that you will have nothing to fear. I passed over the bridge twice to and from SEMA two weeks ago and anyone who is looking for a view will be disappointed unless they are sitting in a lawn chair on top of a semi trailer. Personally that would be too high for me without the 1014 feet to the Colorado.. It seems very short and there is absolutely no view over the concrete sides that are at least 8 feet higher than the roadway. It is a long way to go for basically nothing. You can have the same experience in the I-10 tunnel with the bonus of plenty of lane changes. When I was coming back on Friday I saw at least 3 speed traps up there and the limit is a grating 45 mph. On the plus side, there are no more security stops...

What had been going on? I glossed over mention of searches, but your comment has me asking what the practice had been.

They would stop vehicles before they crossed the dam. This led to traffic issues.

Can you still drive across the dam or is the bridge and Laughlin the only way to get to Vegas from AZ?

Mikie, Here is the official response:
Q. WHEN THE NEW CROSSING IS BUILT, WILL THE EXISTING ROADWAY ON THE DAM REMAIN OPEN FOR PUBLIC TRAFFIC?
A. The present roadway will remain open to Hoover Dam visitors. However, through traffic and truck traffic will not be permitted on the dam.
I read that as a no.

They (Homeland Security) would stop every vehicle going across the dam and search any that were closed in like Suburbans, Tahoes, pickups with a bed cover. No trailers, no large trucks... They were afraid someone would blow up the dam. Might be a bit difficult to do as the thing is so massive that apparently all of the concrete is not yet cured after more than 70 years. It would probably require a 100 megaton nuke to do so and there is nothing to stop someone doing that from the bridge...
In other news, if the water drops only 6 more feet there will not be enough pressure to spin the turbines and produce electricity. A testament to unbridled development and population growth in the west..
There is still a turn off to tour the dam though...

Mikie...I came back through Laughlin after SEMA because of the road construction on 93. On the way to SEMA it was slow and go all along 93. There were even flagmen stopping traffic. I figured it would be faster through Laughlin. I'm sure it was.
