things crooks do
Hey Gang,
I spent yesterday re-keying 14 friggin. locks in my Moms house. Seems her super secret key hiding rock was discovered and they took the key. The freaky part is 3 days later when I heard about all this I retrieved the rock SAFE and the key had been returned back into the rock!!! I did check the facts before replacing all the damn locks. Still makes me say hmmm.
The Lock Guy warned a new thing in the hood right now is defeating the garage door closer. Seems the crooks like to use political posters (like a 1 by 3 foot plastic sign). They fold these plastic signs in half and slide under the garage door. When folks back out to leave the sign flops open and blocks the light beam on the door. The blocked beam keeps the door from staying/going down either. Owners push the button and drive away. The crooks then pull into the open garage and load up.

Why would somebody take the key, not use it, and then return it? I'm not a criminal, so sometimes I can't figure out why they do the things they do? Could they have made a copy for later use?
When I leave my garage, I always check to be sure the door is all the way down. Sometimes the sensor fails, and it will bounce back up.

A coworker of mine had the same thing happen with the key, they take it make a copy and rob you for months taking a little at a time. You leave they come in still a little here are and there. He was so distraught after he found out what had happened he moved.

what you shoould have done is send you mother on vacation, wait inside with a remington 870 wingmaster, covered the wall behind the door with plastic and when they entered splattered their useless sodemite brains all over the wall. simply remove the plastic and call to have the police take the carcus away.

The more I think about the possibilities. At least the new locks will slow them down. The shotgun would slow them down even more. I like it.

That is why you only want one witness....the homeowner/shooter.

That view point is one the thief should be thinking about....not the person whose stuff is getting stolen.

I prefer to shoot'em in the knee. It makes it extremely painful for them and gives them lifetime birth control protection--it makes them LIMP

This same thing was happening a few years not far from where I live. They would watch kids come home to get the hidden key so they know where it is. Then when everyone is gone they take the key, make a copy and return it before anyone gets home. They wait til people are gone and clean them out. No broken door jams or windows. If they take jewlery or small items the owners may not even know they are gone for a while making it harder to catch them.
Motion sensor video security. I can watch my house, garage and property inside and out using my iphone app or any computer at any time and it is recorded to a hard drive. It would take a very keen eye to find any of the video sensors.

I have disabled my garage door light beam sensors and specified a garage door without windows to prevent the scum from hooking the manual door release cord with a piece of wire..

I know my own type A personality says bring it on bad guys, I am not going too their home with immediate extreme actions but I am very ready if they enter my home. I think we all have prepared to protect the family in our own homes.
When crooks take action of any level at the home of a loved one it changes or defeats many levels of mental security. Right now it is just a copied key but still a real kick in the nuts. You are pretty limited when not your own home and not there to react to any future attacks. If anything does happen I pray the folks are not home either. Is all this over reacting .... sure if it is not your mom/dad or?

As far as I'm concerned, it should not be called burglary, it is in fact Home Invasion!

Pat, with the use of a hooked wire they can catch the release handle without windows. I recently removed the rope and handle and zip-tied the release lever up.
I the rare occasion that you have to use the release, simply cut the zip-tie and flip the lever by hand.
