Default New shelby hemi crate motor

Did anyone else stop by the shelby booth and see the prototype hemi crate motor? I spoke with them a little. It is the SBF 427 with Hemi head and produces about 700 hp. They plan on doing a lower profile intake or sidedraft fuel injection to be able to fit in under the hood of a csx car and start offering it as a crate motor down the road. The rep said they planned on having it out this summer.

Shelby starting to compete with Roush maybe? or he finally figured out how much money has made off putting thier motors in his cars over the last few years?

I just know it was a monster looking motor. The valve covers were bigger than a dodge Hemi's( I mean a real one, not the one dodge is trying to pass off today as a hemi)

Ron and youse other 511 Roush owners: maybe shoulda waited to get one of these. Perhaps you wouldn't have had to wait those many months to get the engines running right, like you did with your Roush engines. How much more money could these cost over what you paid?

I'm not a big Roush fan for various reasons, but I'm not sure Shelby can or will do it any better! Either way, it will cost considerably more, be less reliable and more difficult to tune than if KC did it.

considering the CSX delivery saga, what makes anyone think Shelby's team is gonna be able to perform better on the hemi engines? Seems to me it takes a whole lota developement and cash to startup from scratch building engines, so perhasp he did buy somebody out. More is needed on this developing event, me thinks. I also think if a person is motivated by brand, Roush would trump Shelby for engines. Just my two cents. John AKA, tin-man

I am beginning to realize that owning a Cobra is a never ending cash event. Roush 511, then the Cammer, awesome lookin beast, and now the Shelby hemi, so which is the best? tin-man

Shelby already builds engines (with Shelby-branded components for engines).

And as you know, you've got a Shelby block for your $50k Roush engine.

Karl,
I would do a lot of things over again if I had the chance. I would of done a kirkham and I would of done a keith craft engine, the cammer wasn't available and I didnt know about kirkham back then. On top of it, John Panfil was a heckuva salesman. Nuff said

but I was under the impression the 'hemi' was a whole new engine re-configuration and a completly seperate build process over the current offerings. Whereas I got a Shelby "block" and Roush configured it into the 511.

Maybe I am totally wrong and if so, Mea Culpa with a whole bunch of apologies.

A couple years ago I saw a prototype set of hemi heads for a small block chevy. Can't remember the builder's name.
The guy manning the booth told me he was planning a building hemi heads for the small block Fords also.
At the time I think the heads were priced around $5500 or so.

These would make a really cool looking and powerful SBF, especially with an aluminum block but in the end why not just choose any number of great combos that are available now- 4.6 DOHC, 5.4 , Ford racings (and eveyone else these days) 408 or 427 small block, etc... Would these heads make enough additional horsepower to really be worth the expense or is it just to be able to be exclusive and say you had a hemi head SBF?

Bob

The bad news is that you have to have custom pistons made, custom rocker arms, etc.

I can make 700hp on a SBF without hemi heads.

The new 427 "Hemi" will be priced close to $40k. There is a running engine being installed in a CSX car at a local shop to Shelby Headquarters! To me, those massive heads make the engine look very short!!!

Seems like a lot of folks believe that the Cammer is the ultimate old skool Ford engine.

But it never had an official place in a Cobra as far as I know. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

What about all of our efforts to remain 'accurate', and I use that term loosely.

Does the Cammer get a pass for being such a BADA$$ FE?

Pffftt, silly question. Of course the Cammer get's a pass, it's a terrific choice for ANY FE project and well suited to a Cobra, any Cobra.

Lot's choices of FE heads out there, high rise, tunnel port, tunnel ram, OHC, all fit nicely and look great on an FE. Side oiler's in particular.
