I'm heading to Ben Avery on Saturday. Need to try out and pattern my new shotgun and new replacement Colt defender. I'll be there about 10am.

Sure, Sounds like a great time. My first thought was to drive the Cobra but I will drive the truck and do a little recon after Ben A. Not much farther down the road headed for the lake is a turn-off that goes back into the hills. This spot has been a fav. shooting spot for years. I will report back on details and dirt road condition for a future place to go plinking.

Do you mention the GPS out of concern the area was annexed by the city or just so turn off from paved road can be found?

I would join you but some of our guys from the VFW are meeting this Saturday to organize a shooting club down here.
Two days ago, my buddy Chuck and I went shooting at the outdoor range in Casa Grande. I was very impressed by what a nice facility it is to go shooting, clean, well taken care of and safe.

I wish I could go BUT.. I get to goto a 8hr Traffic Survival School. The ticket I got for accident, running a red light triggers a mandantory Traffic Survival Class. I paid my $240.00 fine now an additional $55 for the class and wasting a Saturday. Not happy about this at all. I think my state reps will be here from me about this.

I would love to go but alas, I am flying back to the midwest today to take my 91 y/o grandmother back home to southern Illinois. The temp next week is a low of 8 and a high a 19 with snow every day in the forecast. What was I thinking volunterring to take her back home. Can't convince her to stay any longer. Went shooting a couple of days ago and shot a 44 magnum for the first time. It didnt habe near the kick that I expected. Had a 6 inch barrel but a lot less kick than my .45 SA.I would assume the longer barrel guns have even less recoil correct?

True, the longer barrels don't tend to buck as much, especially if they are ported. If you ever to get your hands on a Deseert Eagle 44mag, you'll be be pleased with its moderate recoil. Its gas action absorbs a lot of it. Now, a 454 Casul is a different story. Fortunately, I got to shoot one and that convinced me not to buy one. Not plesant, even though it was ported. Hurt my poor little hand.

Simple formula: More weight=less recoil. I have both and my .44 mag is as violent as I can handle in a handgun. Also keep in mind the muzzle velocity of the .45 is much less with almost the same weight bullet. 230 vs 240 gr normal.

Just a couple of things about recoil... The most violent recoiling handgun I've ever handled is the Desert Eagle .50 Cal. Makes the Casull and the Linebaugh both look like pikers.. Never fired the .50 Linebaugh however so that may be a qualifier.

The recoil of any handgun is a direct function of the weight of the powder charge times the square of the velocity of the bullet times the weight of the bullet in grains divided by the weight of the firearm times a 32 pound square constant times 7000 (the number of grains in 1 pound). It is read in two measures. Weight of recoil and velocity of recoil. Lots of weight at a slow velocity is a gentle shove. Little weight at a high velocity is like getting hit with a hammer. All of the combinations in between apply. Then you have to factor in something called moment of balance. That is a factor of the fulcrum point of the recoil. With a longer barrel the counter weight on the fulcrum of the grip counter acts the natural lift of the muzzle and tends to make the recoil feel less than it may actually be. It can get very complicated from there are you enter the realm of felt recoil and actual recoil. Interesting science.

Subjective thoughts here.. I have fired 4 or 5 different 44Mags and 6 or 7 different .45 autos. The .44s have more recoil than the .45s. Heck, a .40 has more recoil than the
.45
A ma deuce is really fun.

Now shotguns.. That is a different story.

Ben Avery Shooting Facility. Mike and I had a fruitful morning out there. Mike and I each brought a couple of .45s and a 12 gauge each. I broke in my new 9mm too but couldn't hit a center target hardly at all. 3 inch barrel is just not enough for accuracy but with 17 round magazines I killed the target anyway. Just not the center. 9 fast rounds of 00 Buck twice really wrecks the target and your shoulder. Mike's new Defender worked just as planned. His XD .45 and my Kahr .45 and 1911 .45 all did just as predicted. My new shock absorbing stock actually works quite well on the Mossberg 590A1. http://www.blackhawk.com/product/spe...,1158,1447.htm

It takes a bit of practice with the shorter barrel but it will come with practice. It took me about 500 rounds to get comfortable with how it shoots as compared to other guns. On the other hand, with 17 rounds you can put many more bullets in the guy to make sure he stays down. Got my new 9 mm h&k broke in and it is a way better gun that I thought it was and is very smooth and accurate. Remember bob - 5 bullets within 6 inches will kill him the same a bullet in the center.

I had not been out in over 4 months. The XD 45 is just soooooooooo nice. 2 to 2.5 inch groupings at 10 yards. The new Defender is a little different than my old one. I need to change the grips to what I had. Gun show is coming up soon. Still I held to 4 inches but that will improve. Dave still using the technique you showed me.

As far as Bob and the 9mm. Practice, practice, and then again. Try dry firing while at home. It really helps. I will not add a disclaimer.
