Question is, does he drink any less? (Never trust a guy who doesn't drink!!!)

Damn, the 29th I should be a little north of Wichita!

I know, but the car is fixed and running better than ever! Now if I can fix the Wichita problem... maybe put wife and dog on an airplane... yea, that's it!

Ralphie, didn't realize that you drove the car enough to break it. What happened, other than coming from the blue oval people?

You just need to man up and spend your summers in AZ. Quit woosing out and running away from the warm, dry heat of our Sonoran desert.

Cam went soft, the two lobes on #7 were almost round and others showed pitting and wear. Don't know why, religiously changed oil but most of the flat tappets were also slightly con-caved, with one actually having a hole worn through.
Had it rebuilt with roller cam, tappets and rockers, stronger push rods, ported and polished GT40 heads with beefed up valve springs. Also went with RPM Airgap intake, a performance clutch and road-race oil pan, and a few other things.
It sure runs a lot smoother and can definitely feel the extra power.
Now back up north to work a little to pay for it.

So Karl, are you calling Ralphie a wimp, I thought the club was made up of fine upstandin' gents, not wimps?

BTW never heard the expression "woosing", boozing, yeah, but woosing, never, so help me understand.

Ralphie, is you gonna let that stand, sure sounds like a challenge?

Steel not hardened enough will wear down the lobes! So I hear!
I'll take any other explanation.

This may be an explanation as to the cause of the worn Flat Tappets and Cam lobe failure. There have been discussions about the newer oils on these forums. I found this one on a GT40 forum:

Extract from "MTA NZ Radiator Magazine, July 2009"

- New Motor Oils Are Bad for Older Engines with Flat Tappet Camshaft

"The lobes on this 289 Ford Mustang flat tappet
cam suffered excessive wear because the motor oil did not contain adequate levels of ZDDP anti-scuff additive. If you are driving an older classic muscle car or hot rod that has an engine with a flat tappet camshaft, you should be aware of the fact that today's "SM" rated motor oils contain much lower levels of anti-scuff additive called "ZDDP" (Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate). The level of ZDDP in current motor oils has been reduced to no more than 0.08% phosphorus to extend the life of the catalytic converter. Phosphorus can contaminate the catalyst over time if the engine uses oil, causing an increase in tailpipe emissions.

The lower ZDDP content is not harmful to late model engines with roller lifters or followers because the loads are much lower on the camshaft lobes. But on pushrod engines with flat tappet cams, the level of ZDDP may be inadequate to prevent cam lobe and lifter wear. In some cases, cam failures have occurred in as little as a few thousand miles of driving! This is even more of a risk in engines if stiffer valve springs and/or higher lift rocker arms are used.

To avoid such problems, you should add a ZDDP additive to the crankcase, or use an oil that meets the previous "SI" service rating, or use diesel motor oil or racing oil that contains adequate levels of ZDDP to protect the camshaft and lifters."

It helps, but look at it this way, its a retirement present for me and I figured I only live once.

And not to put a fine point on it, I just read the post about Michael Sarrazin dyin' at 70, and I realize I'll be retiring at 70, so talk about then livin' it up, an burnin' bridges, doin' burnouts, chasin' my wife and acting like a silly kid again, yeah, bring it.

By any chance you were running Mobile One full syn oil?
Mine did the exact same thing after switching to the high dollar oil.

Flat tappet cams have a tentancy to round out/wear down lobes especially at break in. Ask Jeff about that. Ralphie, you made a smart move to hydraulic. No more valve lash adjusting and tappet noise. Did you put the NOS back on?

Does Ralphy really have NOS and why would he, with all that HP, does he race?

I haven't heard of anyone in the last couple of years that has had any luck with a flat tappet cam. Currently I have a solid lifter motor that is due for an oil change, I will be using the proper additive.

Yes, DWRAT, I did switch to Mobil 1 about a thousand miles prior to the breakdown, but had been running Royal Purple for about 3 years before the last switch to Mobil 1.

Bob, the engine has just over 21000 miles on it and had not solid but Hydraulic flat tappets, so it was not a break-in problem.
Did not replace the NOS since the new RPM Airgap intake is slightly taller and did not have enough hood clearance to keep the 1/2 inch nitrous plate.
