Mobile One sounds like the problem, mine was toast in about 500 miles after using mobile One.
If you need help installing the NOS I'm pretty good at it,ask JeffC.

Bob, the engine has just over 21000 miles on it and had not solid but Hydraulic flat tappets, so it was not a break-in problem.
Did not replace the NOS since the new RPM Airgap intake is slightly taller and did not have enough hood clearance to keep the 1/2 inch nitrous plate.

Flat tappets are flat tappets, whether they be solid or hydralic. Roller lifters can be either solid or hydralic too. I think your problem is exactly that, the Mobil One. My guess is the Royal Purple you used had the appropriate additives. They started taking the good stuff out of oil a couple of years ago by EPA decree but some racing oils kept it in (off highway use). Royal Purple may have been one to keep it HOWEVER, check any proposed oil or additive for the proper amount and type of additive. Check the manufacturer's web site.
Now that you are running a roller cam, you shouldn't have to worry about it.
Just wanted to clear up for other readers.

Dang! I'd scheduled a trip down there for the Bondurant class for next week. As I was talking with Car Nut it occurred to me that I didn't know the 66 tour was next weekend or I would have come down for the drive and taken the class the week after. Oh well, maybe next year.

Tinman, generally there are 900+ classic cars that participate from many states. Here is the organizer's website: Route 66 Association of Arizona There are many videos about the cruise. Such as: YouTube - Arizona Route 66 Fun Run, 2009 and YouTube - Route 66 Fun Run, 2007
Simply a good time for all.

Looks like perfect weather for the run. Low 80s with all the sun you can stand. Mikie's done well this year.
When it comes to oil additives, who like what? MOA, Bardahl, STP, Marvel's????

Yeah, and Kingman is a town to behold that weekend. The sights of classics and hot rods, the sounds of loud engines, the smell of burn-outs wafting thru the air, good company, and a sense of history with Route 66 are the name of the game there. It's a BLAST, and I'm bringing a couple'a cameras.

Wow! We're actually going to see your smiling face this weekend? I presume from this that you have your car back and it's working right? That's great. You've been missed.

Oh yeah, I'm planning on going for sure. Engine's working fine so far. I've got a little over 500 miles now on the rebuild and will be taking the car up next week to get a first oil change and the filter cut open and inspected for any bad news. Also getting a transmission fluid change and a general once-over before the run. Roush says less than 4000 rpm for the first 500 miles, I'm extending that to 1000 miles just to be sure. Should have it nice and broken in by the time I get back from the Run. Keeping my fingers crossed...

Danr, you will probably get more response if you start a new thread on the subject of oil additives.
By the way I add one of these every other oil change: Pro Blend No. 8080 Racing Formula http://www.pro-blend.com/ENGINELUBE2.htm
Here it is on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Blend-8080.../dp/B0002W09MA
Keeps engine cool.

Found an oil this weekend that should eliminate the need for Zinc/Phos additive. It is Valvoline VR-1 Racing oil with high zinc content. Actual numbers are .13 percent zinc and .14 percent phosphrous. O'Reilly regularly stocks it. (1300 ppm and 1400 ppm if I did my math right). It is available in 20w/50.
.12 percent or 1200 ppm seems to be the general concensus on how much you should have for a flat tappet motor.
Saves you money on not having to buy the additive in addition to the motor oil. Valvoline also makes the high zinc in a full synthetic blend Racing oil.
