"r" does not mean rev it up!!!
This thread is sort of a public service announcement.
The R on an automatic transmission does not stand for Rev It Up. Nor does it stand for Race, or anything else other than than REVERSE.
Reverse means engaging the transmission in a gear that makes it go backwards. It will not reverse a mistake.
So when putting your transmission in R, reving it up will only make you go backwards at a rapid rate of speed, possibly causing non-reversing damage to the person behind you. If you're lucky, the person behind you anticipated correctly and had a two car buffer and you could put the brakes on in time.
In that event, you will be lucky to reel from a regaling from the person in the right hand seat instead of a recovery claim or a damaged rear. It also delays having to paint your car pink.
I hope this clears it up.
This thread is now open for response.

Well Geee wiz, hows a guy know it is in R if somebody didn't hook up a red light or it has a teeny weeny pointer near the other letters?
What ya need is a light to install on the dash so nobody gets surprised. It could flash on and off and maybe start a back up siren that yells beep beep.

Perhaps install a shifter with a reverse lock out. Heck, add a forward lock out too.
I kind of think maybe one of those back up alarms that the garbage trucks use would be a nice addition.

Are you hinting that all of this logic failed to dawn on someone who almost ran into someone else? How terrible. Perhaps a pink backup warning light would be a good start on safer operation?

I'm sorry for putting you in harms way. It could have been worse... A horse could have backed up to your car and, well......
I don't think a working llight for the R would have worked.
Jeff think of fat chick water but worse.

Car Nut, well praise the Lord for making this clear and I do believe there will be many a folk on this forum will be thankful for your explanation. . That said err, hmmm, well, how can I say this, well, here goes: ya see Car Nut, for me the explanation is moot since it don't make no never mind in my case cuz it don't go forward or backwards, or reverse as you call it, but we're workin' on it and it will get better and will get to go forward and backwards at some point in time. I have world class Doctors of automotive sciences weaving their magic and applied knowledge to reverse the ailment my car is saddled with.
BTW was your post in retaliation for some poor fine upstandin' gent running or almost running into you, there seems to be a back story here, do tell. tin-man

Tinny,
While you may not be going forward or backwards at the present time, it makes this advice only temporarily moot.
As far as the back story goes, there is one. In this case however, the perp has already been duly chastised by his better half and there is no need to identify him. This story will be added to the Saturday night fodder.
BTW, the only damage done was a pair of soiled shorts and a broken ear drum.

Forgive me for barging in on a local conversation, but I did once live in Arizona. This thread reminds me that I will never forgive the kind man who taught me to drive because he taught me in a Peugeot with a four speed manual on the column. Later, I found myself driving a 1952 Chevy pickup. While sitting at the only traffic light in town, I was daydreaming and didn't notice it turn green. When I did see the light, I quickly shifted into first (at least it would have been first in the damn Peugeot), hit the gas, popped the clutch and promptly backed up about twenty feet with one tire squeeking. Fortunately there was no one behind me. Red faced, I eased it into the real first gear and pulled away hoping no one saw my gaff. That was almost fifty years ago and I can still feel the embarrassment.

Perhaps not germaine, but I remember riding with Carter Gette in his cammer-powered Cobra and watching the tach clear the last numeral (7000 I believe) and go on to the "P" in RPM. Carter calmly asked if I knew that it stood for "plenty".

Yeah and everyone else up there.
Poor car. Front end side or back-end are not safe.
